When moving the lever from its resting position (tip near the camera) I have to apply a noticeable amount of strength to bring it to the half-cocked position, it almost feels like I will break something.

Advancing the frame from that position also offers resistance, it’s not smooth at all and there is no definite feel for the end of the movement.

When the lever goes back from there to the half cocked position, pushing it back in also feels stiff and like forcing it.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hmmm...mine was a bit stiff at first. It had never been used to take pictures before I got mine in March of this year. The "lever-out/half-cocked" position is noticeably smoother after the first 10 rolls. Advancing the film has been very smooth on mine. Maybe just sit and dry-fire lots of frames... and make sure the film is loaded correctly; hope it gets better with use-- I'm afraid many of these S3-2000 cameras were not really used to take pictures and they need EXERCISE.
