advice needed: used upgraded to M8.u or demo M8 w/ 2 yr warranty ?

Prices are equal which is one of the reasons why it's not easy to choose.

Then get the M8.2. All the upgrades, plus some you can't get, e.g., discreet advance. Better sorted out camera. Better resale. Two year warranty. Plus a free black dot.

I have one. You'll love it. Do it. Rest easy.

I have bought a used M8.2 (without any warranty) some weeks ago.

Before using it, I thought about the same questions - M8 vs. M8.2 and thought, the M8 with the faster shutter should be preferred.

Until now, I have never missed the faster shutter and barely scratch 1/2000.
I like, that the shutter of the M8.2 is slightly less loud, but then again, it is much louder than my film M cameras. A even slightly louder M8 would barely bother me.

When using the camera with flash, the 1/250 could well be the biggest difference between the two cameras for having a wider control of light.

So from the differences in functions, I do not prefer either camera over the other.

The 2 year warranty is worth a lot in my opinion (helping you, to sort out ANY issue, that might occur during the next months).

I would opt for the 2year warranty demo for the same price.

In the process of acquiring an M8 I have now the following two options:
- a used in excellent condition M8 upgraded to M8.u (quieter shutter and screen), no warranty;
- a demo M8 w/ 2 yr factory warranty.

The upgraded camera is a better sorted camera than the original M8. If it has the new shutter then that should improve long term reliability and the sapphire screen IS a big deal btw (unless you like sticky protectors on it).

M8 original with warranty is appealing from a peace of mind perspective (for 2 years at least) but you will lose out on some of the benefits of the quieter/better shutter and more resilient screen.

In terms of resale, I don't know if the factory warranty will be transferrable for you in your country. If it is, then that's a benefit. If not, I'd consider the upgraded camera because it'll have a higher residual value should you decide to sell it.

Thank you all. I went to see the demo's but didn't like them - quite clearly used - although refurbished (red marks on serial #) and with warranty. I liked it as a camera though and will keep on looking for a good one.
