Advice on a new 50?

Collapsed Elmar 2.8 with hood and filter was too bulky, nothing even close to compactness, extracted - way too long and disproportional. I have sold it without regrets.

Well, that's the end of that.

I own the latest version of the 50 Summicron with built in hood in chrome. I am looking for something a bit faster (so probably f1.4) in black to use primarily on my black M5 and would like suggestions.

I have given some thought to the 50f1.1 Nokton but don't take many photos that require that type of speed. And I own a 35f1.2 and it is a big lens. I think about an early Summilux but am not averse to either the Zeiss or Voightlander products.

So, let's hear your opinions. Again, the lens will be used primarily on the M5 for when I am traveling and too lazy to carry more then one lens.

Thanks.

I would not do it. Keep the f2 and forget the stop you think you are missing.
If you know it's going to be a light challenge the F1.2/35mm is going to be better for handheld low light anyway.
The difference in focal length is one step forward or a bit of cropping.
With Rangefinders,.. 50mm f2/f2.5 is the sweet spot for DOF, size, and weight.
With a reflex f1.4 is nice for a brighter VF and precise focus.

Unless one is chasing bokeh or subject separation f2 is ideal for a 50mm.

In your position (travel) I would rather trade in the f1.2/35mm for a f1.4/35mm Nokton of much smaller size.
The Summicron 50mm and a Nokton f1.4/35mm would be an ideal pairing of precision sharpness and fast handhold ability.

I have both a Nokton 50/1.5 ASPH (LTM) and a Color Skopar 50/2.5. In the past, I've owned a couple of Summicrons and an Elmer 5.0cm. (For the SL, I also have the Summilux-R 50 and Summicron-R 50.)

For an M, what I'm most likely to do is sell both Voigtländer lenses and use that money to help fund a six-bit-coded generation Summicron-M 50: small, light, lovely imaging throughout. I really don't want or need the extra size and weight of a faster lens, although the Summilux-M 50 is a magnificent performer. The coding is more important to me because that helps with the M-D body.

Thanks for the replies. The lens is for my M5 so Elmar is out. Plus it is f2.8 which last time I looked is slower then f2. May not purchase anything as I have a great 50 f2.

I've been debating the same thing. My Summitar and Jupiter 8 are great, but I really want a fast 50 and have been considering a CV 50 Nokton 1.1, 1.5, and the Summilux. The Canon 50/1.4 is also a potential runner. I'm interested in where this thread goes.
