If you have a Walgreen's near you, it might be worth your time to look at their film display. I just bought a pack of 8 rolls of ASA 200 (C-41 process) color Walgreen's film for $5.99. This is AGFA film, and it works out to less than 75 cents a roll. They had a few packs like this, and the employee said it wasn't really a sale as much as a packaged promotion. They have other speeds available, but only the 200 is at this price.

Hi Jon,

The 8-packs of 200 film have been out now for a couple of weeks but it's good to remind people about it. So far I've bought 7 packs (56 rolls) and hope to get a couple more for Christmas. I've been stocking my freezer!

The 200 is excellent film IMO so I've been taking advantage of the sale.

Jon - thank you for the heads up. Sadly, I'm in the UK - DOH :- (

Hmm...mailing would cause the loss of some economy, but then again the exchange rate would be in your favor, wouldn't it? Probably the best way to go would be to use one of those large Global Priority envelopes and see how many rolls could be fit into it. The cost of sending that envelope is a flat $9, and if we could get 16 rolls to fit, that would be $13.00 (after Dallas sales tax) + $9 mailing + $2 for the PayPal robber barons = $24.00 or about 13.70 pounds, right? So, each roll would cost you net about .86 pounds or 14 pence shy of a quid (and maybe a farthing or three for good measure). Am I right on that? If so, it still doesn't sound bad, does it? Let me know if you want me to do that.

I picked up a couple packs of this at least a month ago. They seem to come and go around here. One day they have them, next day they don't. I'm tempted to pick up a few more, but right now I have 200 film coming out of my ears!

I understand that...I have more of the stuff than I need, also. However, the little voice is telling me that a year or two from now I may wish I had bought some 75 cent rolls of it. Almost every time I've ignored the little voice, I've wished I had listened. Especially since "the beer idea."

Jon - nice maths! I'll send a PM.

Your voice is probably right ...

I'm not convinced that film per se will be going bibi in 2 years, but I have a feeling that this is the lowest price we will see decent film for quite some time, especially if Agfa is not going to be providing this anymore.

Especially since "the beer idea."

Okay, I'll bite. Beer idea? 🙂

Yep, the "beer idea." One of the times I ignored the little voice. A big fat mistake, too. In 1967, I lived very close to Mexico, and I spent a fair amount of time over there. There was a beer I liked, and the little voice told me I should step up and get the import rights for North America. Nobody had them, and nobody was doing anything with the brand at all. The name of it? Corona. It sold for 60 cents a six pack then, and it was bottled in small brown bottles which resembled little barrels. Anybody paying attention knows it has been the great beer success story of the last 50 years...literally billions of dollars of it have been sold since the mid-late 1970s. So. The beer idea. A true story of opportunity tinkled away.

I'm not saying AGFA 200 film will be the same, but you never know.

So we might be buying beer from you instead of light seals, huh? 🙂

One fond memory of Cinco de Mayo a few years back is going to a townie bar in Las Vegas where they had Corona on special. The bartender had it chilled to the point that he would make a little show of opening it on the bar in front of you and a little icicle would form just as he popped the cap! 🙂

If you don't know what the weather is like in Las Vegas in May, it had been over 100 that day, and was still in the 90's in the evening. That arctic Corona was most welcome. 🙂

I'm not saying AGFA 200 film will be the same, but you never know.

Hey, find a film that's not well known here in the States and start importing it! 🙂

Well....you might have been buying beer and light seals from me. You could still get a chance to buy beer from me. I have another "sleeper" in the beer department. As amazing as it might sound, I don't think anybody has recognized the beauty of the timing with this one. That really shocks me, because Madison Avenue and the creators of the South Beach Diet and other low carb devotees have set this up to be a perfect grandslam.

What if I told you I could give you an ultra low-calorie, low-carb beer that (a) tasted good and crisp (b) had no bitter aftertaste...you know that cloying annoying bitterness that hangs on your tongue like bad mud on your running shoes and (c) is low-alcohol, too? Does that sound like an impossible combination? We've had that exact beer here in Texas since the early 1970s. Think about it...a beer that doesn't make you fat, doesn't cause you to stumble around like a dummy and tastes good.

Wait..... don't tell me. It's right on the tip of my tongue! I GOT IT! Lone Star! Right?? 😀

Walker (Who used to drink Dixie on tap 'cause it was goooooood! Cheap, too!)

Sounds like a beer worth drinking... 🙂 Would help make up for the fact that there's not a Walgreens within 100 miles of where I live... 😡 Anybody want to send some to Montana? lol... I could burn it up in the two Yashica GSN's and the Yashica Minister D I have coming... any day now...

No, it isn't Lone Star...actually it has been around longer. I'll give you a hint. It was one of Paul Newman's favorites, and if you ever saw the movie "Hud," he was drinking a can when he and his nephew were in the bar. The parent company has been around almost as long as Budweiser, but obviously no Bud product fits today's fad diets. Not that these diets are really the answer to anything. For that, we need to come up with a way to turn endomorphs into ectomorphs or at least mesomorphs, and for that we'll need to master reverse genetic engineering. And I really hope I'm still alive when somebody tries that. The end product should be side-splitting hilarious.

What I'm talking about is a beer with fewer calories per can than some flavored "sport" waters, and less than half the calories of a Coke. In fact, you could drink it while you're jogging. Hey! There's an ad campaign for you. People drinking beer while jogging. That has to rival the KFC campaign that alleged people could lose weight by eating fried chicken. Remember that one? An ad man with an almost completely dead mind...and probably a new career by now.

Well, all this talk about beer and fried chicken has made me hungry. I'm going to jog over to KFC and then by the liquor store.

Jon - thanks for the tip. Just snagged the last 3 bundles they had around the corner. Will have to check the others locally. Cant beat it.

Of course...the omniscient internet. Pearl Light, actually. 68 calories per can. Imagine that. A can of beer with only 68 calories. A 6 pack will barely break 400 calories and a full case will only be 1,632. Heck, there are some folks out there that would lose weight on a 1,600 calorie per day diet, wouldn't they? To heck with the South Beach Diet, the high protein diet, Jack LaLanne, Suzanne Somers thighmaster and all that other hooey. We'll have them all on the Pearl Light Diet. Just drink a case of this stuff every day. You'll be insanely happy while you watch those pounds melt away. Do you think we'll need to sell it under two names in order to market it as a sports drink and a dietary supplement? Maybe add some vitamins so people don't croak before they get all skinny?

I could send you some. When I was jogging over to the KFC, I passed a Walgreen's and picked up some more. They didn't want to let me in at first, but after I explained I was drinking a medically responsible "sports drink," they said I could come in if I promised not to jog through the store.

Jon

Hey Jon,
Do they still put those little cartoons under the bottle caps of Pearl? I used to drink Pearl back in the '80s, and they had these stick-figure riddles, I recall they were pretty funny. Of course, things get funnier when you've had 3 or 7 beers... I hope Pearl Light is better than it was back then, I could not abide the stuff.
