Well it's what I call them but then I was having a conversation with a neighbour of similar age recently, both of us bemoaning the fact that so many terms and expressions of our youth are no longer used. So while it was common years ago I may be the only one still using it!
... no they are still telegraph-poles, and so is the wireless

"Telegraph pole"s is funny to my US ear, is that common in the UK, rather than "telephone" or the more common "utility" poles?
They are always referred to as telegraph poles .
Utility is a fairly recent word in the UK (I would suggest).
Only applied to the companies who supply a particular service .
Come to think of it its only the media who use that ...most people still call them as gas or electricity companies rather than utility companies.
Great shots everyone ...never think of taking anything like that .

I have to say I never thought about calling them telegraph poles, just poles I guess, maybe electric poles although where I live they're such a mess it can't be just power lines, probably phone lines and who knows what else

I seem to recall that we called them telephone poles or light poles, depending on what we thought they carried. Old as I am, we were long past telegraph poles when I was a kid. It is interesting how many places still have a Telegraph road. The county I live in still has remnants of one, but many parts have been given other names, rewards for political contributors no doubt.
Now where I live, at least most of the neighborhoods of the last 40 years or so, have all infrastructure buried. There are still older houses, or those which weren't built by large contractors, that have exposed wires.
