I bought a copy of the SLR Yearbook 1971 at a charity book sale on Saturday. On the Alpa 10d page, it states that the lens range extends "from 1.98mm wide angle...." I'll repeat that- one point nine eight millimeters. Is that a misprint? Has anyone ever used, of even seen such a lens? What was the angle of view? Why not just call it 2mm?

The top-end lens was a 5000mm catadioptric, presumably for folk wanting to watch Moon landings from their back garden. I have to have one of those!

I think the publication was most likely referring to the Kinoptik 9.8mm Tegea f/1.8 available through the 1960s to early 1970s. (Source: Thewes' definitive ALPA reference book). There were various other wide angles available in Alpa bayonet, with focal lengths of 18mm, for instance, but I've not seen a reference to a 19.8mm lens. The lens was said to be a favourite of Stanley Kubrick's. Have found references to it being used to film A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. Covers the popular 35mm motion picture formats, but will vignette on 135 format apparently, which probably slowed down its adoption to Alpa bayonet, although Kinoptik would supply most of their lenses in that mount if requested. Not a fisheye, no distortion. Interesting lens. See here for more:

A couple of lunchtimes Googling and I've cracked it. From a fisheye lens specialist site called The Fish List...
  • kinoptik-tegea.jpg

    Kinoptik
    Kinoptik Super – Tegea 1/1.9 f=1.98mm

    Circular Fisheye1.9 mm197°
    Format: cine
    Mount: AlpaCINE MOUNT- C-mount
It was a fisheye lens for 16mm cine, also available in Alpa mount.

A bit of browsing through my Alpa files uncovered Kinoptic lists from the US importer dated october 1994 where both the 1,9mm with 8,7mm image diameter and 9mm back focus was listed as well as the 5,7/1,9 and 9,8/1,8 (T:2,3) 26mm image diameter, 100lpmm central resolution, standard operating temperatures -20 to +60C and -40 to +60 on request. However at that time it was not listed in Alpa mount, but cost 4999USD in arriflex AAton etc. mount with an added charge for filter slot and hood.
