Hi everyone,

Are there any alternative hoods for the 50mm rigid, rather than the standard leica hood:
* if I am using it with a filter attached
* prefer something in chrome

The following thread suggests that without a filter, the Elmar-M hood works without vignetting: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136635&highlight=50mm+summicron+rigid but I usually have a yellow filter on all my lenses.

Do people find that without a hood, they get a lot of flare with this lens?

Finally, with a filter on the lens and no hood, I've found that the lens cap is quite loose. Does anyone have a nifty trick to make the cap stay on?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the suggestion. With a filter and step-down ring (46->39mm), it might add a bit too much length. I'll keep this option in mind though.

Ged,

I found that the version 3 50 Elmar hood works not only on the 50 Rigid without a filter, but also this will work on a 35/2.8 Summaron without a filter as well. What I like about this hood is that the Leica metal lens cap still works, that it has even less VF'er blockage than say a 12585 vented Leica hood, and overall is smaller.

I find that for some reason that the 50 Rigid and 50's over all need less filtering in terms of adding contrast, and that a Leica "O" yellow filter adds just an edge to the contrast without any filter factor.

Your post is timely because I just received a tube of black silicone, I already have the Leica "0" filter ring loose, and I'm going to silicone the glass removed into the chrome 50 Elmar hood. using the Elmar hood like an oversized filter ring.

On my 35/2.8 Summaron I like a 2X yellow and will reserve the 12585 hood for use with the Summaron.

Thanks for your replies everyone! I'm coming from the Nikon world where I always added a filter to my lenses. The other reason I wanted to use a filter is that when I was looking for this lens, I saw so many examples with "cleaning marks". This is my first lens of that vintage, I assume the glass is very soft and so regularly cleaning a filter rather than the front element is probably a good move. What do you do to clean the front element?

Does this lens tend to flare without a hood?

Calzone: Thanks for the nifty advice and pointer to the "0" yellow filter! Is this the hood you mentioned: hood for 50mm f/2.8? Where do you get black silicon from?

Vics: Thanks for the pic - it does look to have good contrast.

David: Thanks for that.

I suggest this hood:

I have two of these, in 39 and 43mm (Nikon S), and they are as excellent as they are cheap. Heavystar is a good source of good quality RF stuff dirt cheap. Adding a Leica logo will typically cost an extra $100.

Leica filters have a slightly smaller diameter than the lenses, so the falling-off lenscap problem is well known. You can sometimes fluff up the velvet lining a bit, or if this doesn't work, just pry the lining away from the cap in a couple places and put a tiny bit of business card thickness cardboard or plastic behind it.

Cheers,
Dez

Calzone: Thanks for the nifty advice and pointer to the "0" yellow filter! Is this the hood you mentioned: hood for 50mm f/2.8? Where do you get black silicon from?

Ged,

That is the hood I use. Very low profile. The Leica "0" yellow filter is basically a slight tint that requires no filter factor.

RTV Silicone is about $4.00 for a tube at Home Depot or any hardware store. The locking ring on many Leica "0" filters are already loose. Use a rubber/latex glove to unscrew.

The cool retro metal lens cap for a Rigid also fits the 50/2.8 Elmar hood.

Rover: Thanks for your suggestion. I found your other post as well. Does this option scratch the chrome?

Hmmm, I have never notice, or looked to tell you the truth. My gut is to say no, not to any degree which has concerned me. That said, such things don't bother me. But that is just me.
