Alternatives to flickr?

Everyone's talking like flickr CAN'T work with IE6, it's too much work etc. The thing is, flickr DID work with IE6, two days ago!

All flickr has to do it give the option of the old interface, which worked fine with IE6, Konqueror, seamonkey, etc.

I never liked flickr, this version is just more of the same. Currently I use Picassa Web from google (1 gb storage free) and when/if I can afford something I'll be looking closely at Smugmug.

The one that really pi$$es me of is photo bucket. The wowsers have deleted some of my nudes occasionally because they found them unsuitable.

I don't know if this will help any of you, but Nikon has a site called Picture Town. It's a 2 GB storage limit. I don't know if you have to be an owner of Nikon gear to use it. The USA site looks like it's open to anyone.

I'm guessing that the Flickr users don't have personal web sites. Maybe the use of several "free" ones will help. I don't know anything about the Nikon site. The info came with a camera manual. Be sure to read the terms; as an "old guy" I don't believe anything is free.

there is webshots but it seems like they use your photos to ear bucks? That sucks...It says photo sharing on their site and you pay to download the photos of others (if they want i suppose). Will you get credit, I dont know.

Just passing the url into the forum never worked with flickr (old or new). You have to past it into an IMG tag here. And get the url of the photo itself and not the url of the page where your photo is displayed.

Which is what I used to do. In other words, I used to got to the size I wanted and grab the link. However now when I go to Flickr I cannot find the link to post into the IMG tag. No doubt I'm being a bit blind here so your advice on how to find it would be appreciated...

I'm guessing they made grabbing the actual photo URLs more difficult because you're not supposed to directly embed them on external sites (e.g. RFF). They ask (require?) that you link back to the original photo, and they provide that link under the "Share" button.

You can still click an image to "zoom" it, select the "View all sizes" link in the upper right and then right click the image to copy the URL. A little extra work, but doable.

The Replace option is under the Actions menu, along with just about everything else you might want to do with an image.

Its not a blind spot Its a fault of the new layout.....I am sure that when testing it, it was still possible to get the link in the old manner, but it now seems to have disappeared in the final version.

The only way I can find to do this is to open the image by clicking on the thumbnail in my photo-stream, and then right clicking it to bring up a menu asking what size you want to open the image as. After you make this selection, the image will open as the size you you have selected and then you need to right click again on the image once more and a context sensitive menu pops up. One of the menu items is "Properties." Click on that item and the image address will appear in a box that you then must copy and paste from then close - Jeebus what an effing too do! That's about a half a dozen steps to do something that used to take two. Does not someone on Flickr staff understand how a high proportion of folk us it. i.e. A major reason I use Flickr is to host my images so I can link to them here and at similar forums.

Its a bloody nuisance and is almost enough to make me change to another image site.

Edit - I have just found a menu item called "Share this" when you open the image. And under that is a further menu item - "Get the Link" But it gives you no choice as to image size - you get the link you are given.

And if you post that link into an IMG tag on RFF it doesn't work, so right clicking on the size you want is they way to go but, as you say, it's a long way to do something that used to be simple :bang:

If you're anti-flickr because of a perceived layout problem, you are sort of missing the point. A gallery it is not. Social media it is.

I suspect you're right. I bet they're heading towards the "facebook" layout for things. Instead of a photostream, flickr will have an "info stream."

So, along with the regular sequence of photos, your photostream will be interspersed with your activities, like:

"Antiquark favorited someone's photo"
"Antiquark commented on someone's photo"
"Antiquark joined a new group."
"Antiquark left some other group."

... and so on.

Not sure I'll be crazy about that. But facebook now has more photographs than flickr. So, at least in the "quantity" metric, flickr is losing the war. And as any dullard manager knows, the only way to beat the competition is to imitate the competition. 🙁

Flickr also added a mechanism to let they have some profit by licensing a picture with GettyImages too.
