Just saw an episode of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" show on Food Network (while waiting for my Dominoes Pizza, how ironic) and noticed that he has a Polaroid 800 folding camera (and yes, it was a rangefinder) in the background on display.

Just funny the things you notice.

Best Regards,

that's like watching Cage's "Lord of War" the other day.. I know it was mentioned a week or so ago, but I had forgotten.. there's just one brief scene where he picks up a CL and snaps a few shots.. I felt like such a camera geek for knowing exactly what he was holding

I know what you mean. When I'm watching a movie with friends, if a firearm or a camera is used in a scene (especially esoteric) everyone turns to me. Well, I'm just geeky like that.

Bill Mattocks

i noticed that polaroid before. goes along with the retro 50s thing. i watch the show whenever i can, it's one of the best shows on food network, along with iron chef (the original one) and food 911.

Wasn't he a cameraman before his food hobby/obsession turned into a new career? His show is filmed very stylistically so I bet he knows his way around both sides of the camera.

My wife and I are big Food Network and HGTV fans. Watch people cook or watch them paint. And of course Discovery, especially Mythbusters.

I knew I was too far gone when I saw a Japanese anime cartoon called FLCL (Fooly Cooly) where one character has a rangefinder - an Olympus XA, I'm certain of it. That's just sad that I knew that!

Althought at the moment, I'm watching "Pride and Prejudice" with the wife. No cameras in it at all.

i remember that, too! wouldn't have thought you watched anime. 😀

Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, the list goes on. Hey, I love classical music, but I cut my teeth at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go watching Black Flag and etc.

It's all good.

Most excellent. That explains it. I always thought I recognized a slight punk aesthetic in you.

🙂

uh oh... here comes a foodie thread... I'm always in for that. It's cold this weekend so it's braised short ribs for Saturday... beefy goodness with some risotto and lentils. Oh yeah red wine too.

Bill I flipped when I say Alton using one of my books on food chemistry. Thats when I wondered if I was going into this too deeply. Nah!

Good stuff. You ever catch a show by X? They were always my favorites out of that scene.

And Alton is by far the most entertaining show on that channel, although I've probably learned/used far more from Jamie Oliver's shows which are almost as entertaining.

Alton Brown's background is in cinematagraphy. That's why his shows are so funny and very well lit and photographed. I'm sure he's stylist or cameraman thought it would be cool to have those props but I'm also sure that he knows a thing or two about cameras

I'm what happens when punks get old, fat, bald, and get a mortgage. My tattoos have faded, my mohawk is history like my hair. I still listen to Sonic Youth and Diamonda Galas, but now I also listen to Glen Campbell, Tony Bennett, Enoch Light, The Hank Dogs, you name it. From the Stooges to the Fugees, from The Specials to Sum 41 (OK, that's not a big stretch). It's all music.

You write books on food chemistry? We have to talk about the benzene ring if you're an organic chemist. I'm building a robot that develops film. The sparks are tremendous.

X? Sure, plenty of times. Well, wait. No, I never saw them play the Whiskey. But I was into X, Scraping Foetus, Wire, Front 242, Diamonda Galas, Firehouse, all of it. Rodney on the Roq - I still have my KROQ albums.

Funny thing is, now I find myself digging alt-country and wham, here's my home boys again. All that dead country-punk is back, only now it is real country, filling the gap that country left when Garth Brooks came to town and country left that night.

Long time ago. Rise Above. Remember Geza X? We need more power.

Sorry to jump in on this, but X was always a favorite (easily within one of the top 5 shows I saw back in the day—and I saw a lot of shows). BTW, they're touring right now. I just saw them last Friday night in San Francisco, original members, and they are still a great show!

🙂

Good Eats = Awesome show. I love it. Alton is a great chef and has an...interesting personality. And besides...he endorses Shun knives...or Shun endorses him...or something. Ever picked up a Shun chef's or santoku knife? Finely built.

@ Bill, that "my" was a possessive, I own the book; not attributive, I didn't write it. Don't want to start an urban myth here.

I'm a fan of Albert King, BB King, Climax Chicago Blues, Savoy Brown, Rory Gallagher, Sex Pistols, Damned, Stranglers, Clash, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Beethoven, Schubert, Sibelius, Mozart, Strauss, Tammy Wynette and Brittney Spears... Just kidding on Britney or is it Britteney..
