Canon LTM Am I missing something? (Canon 35mm f/2 problem)

Just got a Canon 35mm f/2 LTM off of a Japanese ebay seller. However, the focus ring is stuck at 1m! There is just a tiny bit of play when I try to turn the ring, but it doesn't move more than a millimeter in either direction. Is there some kind of lock I'm not aware of, or did I just get a lemon?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sherry Krauter also works on Canon lenses. This lens does not have a focus lock (unlike the older Canon 35/1.8). If the glass is in good condition, it's worth a repair, but if your seller did not disclose the defect I'd demand a partial refund.

Agreed, send the lens back. It came defective. No reason to keep it and there's no reason to spend your money getting it fixed.

I would have to agree that you should return the lens for a full refund if the seller did not mention the frozen focus. The fact that the focus only moves a fraction indicates that in all probability the lens was dropped.

Don't ask for a partial refund as that is a common scammer tactic and The Great Ones may not look down upon you favorably. Send it back and get all your money refunded, including the original shipping costs if you paid them. You will have to pay return shipping. Research what kind of delivery/signature verification is required and possible in order to get refunded. Without that, you won't get your money back.

Postal Priority is the way to go here since you can now get tracking all the way to delivery.

From experience I can tell you do not just return the item without going through Ebay. You need file a claim under Ebay's Buyer Protection for an item that does not match the sellers description. If you follow the protocol Ebay will refund your money even if the seller refuses to. However, you do not get any of your postage back.

Yeah, I have a feeling the seller knew he was doing wrong. He offered me two choices:

1) Keep the lens and get a partial refund of $50

2) Send back for a full refund


I told him it's coming back, there's no way that a $50 discount will offset the cost of a lens repair.

Don't worry, It's going back by express mail with full tracking and insurance. I don't take chances. And if I don't get my refund, I'll open up a dispute and hand over my messages and my return tracking to eBay.

Even to the final destination in Japan? Maybe I misunderstood the OP about the seller being Japanese. In the past when I've sent items outside of the USA, USPS tracking sometimes ends when it leaves the country. On the other hand, USPS tracking from the USA to Western Australia was better than what I've seen domestically.

Yeah, unless you ship express mail, tracking ends once the package leaves the US. I only use express when shipping abroad.

Once the package has left the country of origin, tracking will often be more up to date from the other end anyway. I'm still sending it express though. I don't trust lesser shipping methods for sending big money items overseas 😛

It's a shame, but true. Overseas buyers beware!Seems like some just don't care about the buyers. It's only about the buck . .. ... for some.

Got the refund without hassle, but it was a waste of over 2 weeks time and $43 return shipping to Japan. 😡

I highly recommend staying away from mkjapan on eBay. On hindsight, reading the neutrals and negatives he has shows that he's pretty careless with his descriptions and conditions of the items he sells. I don't think he's out to scam anyone, but he obviously doesn't test his equipment out before selling.
