USPS tracking might end when it leaves the US, but the destination country's postal service tracking will often pick it up depending on the country and the shipping method.
Once the package has left the country of origin, tracking will often be more up to date from the other end anyway. Pretty much all international mail can be tracked when it's inbound to Japan via their site here:

Sites like track-trace.com are great; it works out and directs you to the right page based on your tracking number.
