and to be clear...i invited no one to leave but i will again point out that if rff is not up to your liking or your standards than feel free to find a site that is - or better yet, start your own sites and let the members run it to their liking.

Actually I think this one doesn't. It's still rather civil. It discusses a problematic practice, but that's about it. That kind of discussion should be possible, or at least I don't see any reason why it shouldn't, neither in my own limited subjective view of right and wrong nor in the site rules.

I don't have any "rights" here. I have a community that I like, and some things happening in it that I don't like. I have three options, in that order:

1. Keep my mouth shut
2. Say what worries me
3. Leave

Currently I'm at #2. I don't see anything wrong with doing so, and I don't think someone can accuse me of not doing it in a civil manner. If Stephen or a moderator thinks I shouldn't voice my concern, or not the way I do, I'm ready to discuss that in an open and honest manner. I don't see where I'm claiming any "rights" by doing so.

I agree entirely that discussion is good. I even said that it was not bad in my earlier post.
This is really getting into a whole 'nuther area.
When we begin a discussion and frame it as being about "censorship," I think we've already reached the conclusion...because most of us would agree that censorship is a bad thing.
The line to be drawn for appropriate moderation is not so clear cut as the case against "censorship."

Agreed. Out of a desire to avoid all disagreement, perfectly reasonable debates are being closed when they show the slightest sign of passion. Some people here seem far too sensitive, confusing animated argument with abusiveness, and sadly some of them have moderating powers. The result is an increasingly anodyne forum, and one I'm close to giving up on. Every time a thread becomes remotely animated, someone calls for it to be closed, and a few pages later closed it what it becomes.

i think it's interesting that most of the rude comments and accusations made by members seem to be fine and acceptable by most and yet any action taken or word spoken by the owner or a mod is automatically condemed.
and if it's childish to invite people to explore other websites then so be it.
i see it as no more childish than some of you holding on to your 'rights' to be rude and uninformed.

This is exactly why the thread was shut down. If you call the insults and digs that have been thrown back and forth in this thread a "discussion" than yes...the ot forum should go if the participants can't behave.

Some people just can't live without controversy. It's the same at work, on forums, in families etc. If there isnt something to complain about what's the point? If there isnt anything to fight about something MUST be created and fast so that we may argue and bicker.

Nothing wrong with disagreement and discussion but when it comes to name calling and personal attacks it is just useless gets us nowhere.
There are quite a lot of users on this forum. A few less won't bother me.

Excuse me, Joe, but I think you can do better than this. "Any action taken or word spoken by a moderator" is "automatically condemned"? Please, we're talking quite specifically about closing threads here, not "any action or word"; that insulted tone is really beneath you. I don't know whether it was you or Stephen closing that thread, but you as moderator and he as site owner have special privileges that other users don't enjoy. These might be the topic of discussion every now and then. Do you see a problem with that? I certainly don't. "Holding on to his 'right' to be rude and uninformed"? I don't see anyone here doing that - do you? Who?

common sense should tell you what is rude and what is not.

Which is part of the problem. People are looking for definitions of something they refuse to accept responsibility for. Treat each other with respect and courtesy. If some one goes astray from that, report the post. This is not the wild west, fastest gun on the street isn't going to win.

It has been mentioned here that this is the big bad Internet, and everyone should expect to be in heated arguments. "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

Sorry, that isn't how it is. There are plenty of places where you can have those types of discussions. Not here. Have lively debate, leave you flames and rudeness at your sides.
