American in London: photo/exploring advice wanted

Barbican centre (check it on flickr) is great also.

Absolutely, and the barbican's galleries are amongst the best in London... (and hence the world)

I forgot to mention that a nice thing to do, that also can give rise to interesting photo opps is to take one of the many walking tours available in London.

These are a pretty cheap and useful way of finding new locations and essentially involve taking a tube train to a specific location (usually a specified tube station) at a specific time and looking for a guy holding something like a flag or sign aloft. This is the tour leader.

You pay your fee (which I think was around ten- twenty pounds when I was there a decade ago ) and when the appointed time arrives you off on foot with the tour leader and any other people who turn up for this tour.

Each tour is themed (there are many such themes ) and the trick is finding one or more tours dealing with subjects of interest to you (e.g if your ancestors came from the east end you might take a tour through that area of London. If you earn your living as a lawyer, you might take a tour through legal district etc.)

These are a great innovation and are a much loved part of visting the city.(Hotels have brochures at their front desks)
