This is quite an amazing moment in the long history of photographic tool development. I suppose this moment may have had its roots in Leica's development of the M8. And now here we are with quite an amazing array of choices that many said was impossible, or at least unwanted, 5 years ago:
The M9... a full frame digital rangefinder!
Fuji X100... an affordable digital Hexar with superb image quality!
Fuji XPro1... an interchangeable lens rangefinder-ish Hexar RF for seriously sub-M9 cost!
Nikon D800... full frame 36MP for $3000!!
And now the Olympus OM-D... gorgeous!.

And of course with all the other amazing digital gear filling the cost/capability gaps. And what's coming next?? What a moment. 🙂

Has there ever been a moment in the development of photographic gear that's been more rich, for amateur and pro alike?

Agree that these cameras each are fantastic choices. But I do have a bit of a sense of deja vu... It's as if history repeats itself, and the list could have read

The M7.. An auto exposure rangefinder
Hexar.. An affordable compact with superb image quality
HexarRF.. an interchangeable lens rangefinder for seriously sub-M7 cost
Nikon F100.. Pro level performance for $3000

Don't think that I'm not glad with current day options.. It's ever so great that we've waded through the first generations of digital cameras that were merely considered great because they were digital. We're seeing a re-emergence of well thought out handling and superb performance again.

Digital? I'm sorry, I don't understand the term. I have always used my digits in my photography...

Yeah, photography does change. I remember the proliferation of SLR which I first noticed in the late 60s and early 70s. Before that I had been quite content with my Welti, Minolta 16, and a 120 folder (Oh, and a cheap roll fillm Polaroid).
