So I really want a DP0M that will give me corner-to-corner sharpness, resolution, micro-contrast, and color with a efov of 18-24 in a small digital package. Since the use is for landscape, the camera-lens combo wouldn't have to be blazing fast, have razor-thin DOF, etc.

But it really seems like excellent UWA performance generally is reserved for higher-tier models, and that compact and relative low cost are mutually exclusive.

I'll admit to be extremely tempted by the Sigma SD1 Merrill with the 8-16mm, but the size of the rig--admittedly not that big--is still big enough to ensure that I probably wouldn't take it with to the places for which I really want to use it (remote mountain areas accessible only by several days walk, generally speaking).

The Leica M9 is a good choice, but again, the cost of the body is expensive, not to mention the lens. The widest effective length I have in Leica M is an Elmar Asph M, one heckuva lens, but wider choices in digitally-compatible M land are either really expensive (21 SEM, 18 SEM, WATE) or else large (ZM 18)

Before I contemplate going back to chromes, just wanted to check with the hive mind for any good ideas.

I've given up on these wides and now stitch for wider views in Landscapes.
Better detail from many stitched images from a longer focal length.. higher magnification lens really shows up in large prints and on a large monitor.

I'm actually stitching a LOT, too, and lovin' it.

But there are occasional scenarios when it doesn't work.

Outside of the sd1m....

Either get the Fuji 14f2.8 or 10-24 zoom OR go Sony a7 and put your wide angle Leica lens on it.

The Sony A7 unfortunately won't mate very well with the Elmar Asph 24/3.8

If corner sharpness is required, the best solution for M wides is still a Leica M.

There's a nice discussion here (https://secure.flickr.com/photos/royprasad/11372912245/) with photos.
In the comments section we see people like me expressing a siimilar dilemma/sentiment.

I really think that I might just sit on this question for 6 months to a year.
