I recently pulled out my father's old Canonet from storage, and was really looking forward to taking some shots with it. However when I started using it, the shutter experienced a type of lag; when I would depress the shutter button, the camera wouldn't fire instantaneously - sometimes taking a fraction of a second or never firing at all.

I chalked this up to a stickly shutter but then I noticed that when the camera was focused to infinity, the camera had no problem at all to fire the shutter. On other distances, the shutter would experience the lag I mentioned earlier.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem? Any tips or advice on how to solve it?
 
Search this site for all kinds of stories about sticky QL17 shutters. Mine was fixed with a wee bit of Ronsonol on a Q-tip, following a rather tedious disassembly.

Many stories are similar.

Many are not! 🙂
 
I was going to go through with that method but I don't think it's gunked up shutters causing the problem as when the lens is set to infinity there is no lag for all shutter speeds. 🙁

I've read through most of the threads regarding canonet shutter problems but none were related to the focus settings so I was hoping there was someone here who could help shed some light on my particular problem 🙂
 
Sounds bizarre to me. Shutter lag on a rangefinder camera? I can only guess it has something to do with the self timer, but that's just pulling an answer out of my ... errr... hat. Is there some reason you can't get a repairman to look at it? If all else looks good, it sounds like a worthwhile investment, to me. Have him do a complete CLA. You mucking about with it, unsure of what's going on is not going to result in anything other than stress for you and possible damage to the camera.
 
I flushed out the shutters and after exercising them for a while it looked like everything would be fine!

However... after a while the winder wouldn't cock the shutter anymore! It seems like one problem after another with this camera 🙁

Sending it for a CLA would be great but im in Japan at the moment so it's a bit hard...
