35/2 Summicron Type 1

35/2 Summicron Type 4 (Pre-Asph)

35/2 ZM Biogon

35/2.5 Summarit-M

The 'cron type 1 with goggles was made for the M3. I have the 35 Biogon-ZM and the Summicron Type 1 (no goggles), and these are quite distinctly different... especially at wider aperture. I can't say one is better overall than the other, just better in certain ways. The Biogon is a superb modern lens with no faults. The Summicron is a superb lens with great character intertwined with optical limitations. I've never used the Type 4 or the Summarit-M and I cannot answer the poll.

Get real.

IT DOESN'T MATTER.

With B+W it's even less important than with colour.

At this level of equipment the photographer's ability is 10,000 times more important than which lens.

Edit (from my wife Frances Schultz): USE THE LENS YOU'VE GOT.

Or (same source):

When I'm not with the lens I love, I love the lens I'm with.

Cheers,

R.

Dear Charlie,

Me too. And indeed, at one time -- 15-20 years ago -- I had a 35 Summicron as well, because everyone told me how much better it was. Well, yes, for test targets, no contest; but I don't shoot test targets except for reviews; as I couldn't be assed to keep changing 35mm lenses for no real improvement in my pictures; as the Summicron is useless at f/1.4; I flogged the Summicron. Never really missed it.

There are very few lenses I buy nowadays, because only very rarely indeed do they do something I can't do otherwise. Occasionally I find something that knocks me out -- like the 75 Summicron or 50 C-Sonnar -- but often that's highly personal too.

Cheers,

Roger

Maybe it's me.. (and it probably is.. heck.. it usually is..) but what exactly is this poll asking?

Is it asking what 35mm lens I like to use with B&W film?
Is it asking, if I had the choice, what lens I would choose?
or is it asking which lenses I own that happen to be 35mm?

Dave

This sums it up!

That's great Roger. Frances really hit it on the head.

No option for my UC-Hex 35/2 or my M-Hex 35/2 or even my Summaron 35/3.5. If I had to vote in a poll that included the options, I think my favourite would be the UC-Hex. But it would be a close call, and might change on even-numbered days.

...Mike

None of them... Hexanon 35/2. The one that is glued on my hexar af.
That's the only one I can afford, and that's what makes me happy.

The yashinon 35/1.8 on the yashica 35 CC is not bad neither...! but that's gone now.

This poll makes no sense. BW only then list a 4 lenses for the snob set. When i opened this I thought this was going to be a poll on BW film. Drat. Whatever. After 3 hours of sleep what do you expect.

Ah, women have such a gift of commonsense!
The problem is Roger that so many of us here waste time wondering if things would be better if we had a different lens to the one we've got. I think the real question is what lens from the list do you require before you believe it can't be bettered.

You can never win at this game though - after a long search I've finally bought a (SLR) 35mm lens that never disappoints me with image quality but I still wish for one that was smaller & lighter. Oops ("smaller & lighter"), I've just given you the cue to hint that I should be using an RF.:)

Cheers, Robin

That summs up not only this poll but lot's of gearhead discussions . LOVE IT !
You have to be out there and take that shot, get it focussed properly and get the exposure spot on. If you even frame it to get the full message across, that's what make a great shot. Does not really matter if it was v1 or v6, pre or past asph;).
