another bag thread! haters keep out...

Seeking advice... hope you don't mind my placing this in this thread!

I just bought a "lot" that included an older Tamrac 610 bag. The problem is... the thing, though in excellent shape, smells like a wet dog.

I have checked the Tamrac site and they *sorta* expressly say: do not submerge (wash) them.

Does anyone have any experience with this? It is canvas and I do not want to ruin it.

1. Fast and silent gear access through the main flap, using a separate zipper. This is true for all three sizes of the Tenba Messenger bags.


2. My photographic gear (without showing all the office stuff in the various pockets) uses only about 3/4 of the available space


3. The same padded insert fits loosely into the Messenger Large and closely into the Messenger Mini (images cropped to same scale). The big difference is the effective MINI outside size.

Im starting to think it could be like this guy sais about the Tenba Mini:

I will be looking for a smaller bag for day trekking.

It's an excellent fit for a small kit and a notebook, but the problem is I probably want to pack some more stuff when on a plane for instance. And less when out shooting.

Spray it with Febreze until material feels wet. Let bag dry in indirect sun.
Then leave it in your car's trunk for a few weeks, until all scent is gone.

i am convinced i will eventually have more bags than i have cameras, you know because of all the possible permutations!

I don't know why you couldn't wash it, but to be safe, what about having it dry cleaned? BTW, my 610 is nylon.

I machine washed a canvas Domke. It came out fine.

Put it inside a pillowcase. Use a mild detergent; gentle cycle.

If desired the dryer will soften it. Leave it in the pillowcase.
Use low heat. Take it out while still damp and let air dry.

Ordered the Hadley Small Sage/Tan Fibrenyte today! Looking forward to discover the look and feel of the bag, what fits and what not. Spent waaaaay too much time researching and initially discarded the Billinghams due to the neardy look of the Khaki one. Well well.. expecting it next week!

I have several bags, many of them non-camera specific + padded inserts, but this is my current do-all setup.

This is custom made Timbuk2 messenger bag. Left handed (right shoulder), compressing straps, blacked out exterior with water proof fabric (I call this "body bag"), then I added their camera insert. I could use Temba insert, but Timbuk2's got tapered sides that fit perfectly to the shape of their bag. When closed, it doesn't look or feel bulky at all. And the insert itself has zipper closure for better water/element proofing.

I can easily carry this much in there without the bag looking ridiculously puffed up. My typical commute will be basically this but carrying OM-D (which in use to take these pics) in place of Mamiya 7, which goes out in this bag in weekends.

Yes, strap is sewn in very securely. One side has quick-adjust buckle so you can change the length very easily (it's a messenger bag to start with). You can use the buckle on the "behind" side of the bag when you wear, but it's easier if it's in the front. That's where you wanna choose which side you put your bag. This one is custom ordered for lefty (no extra cost).

You can order custom bags on their site http://www.timbuk2.com/ but you do have a few special options you can ask like one-panel design instead of three panels if you can come to the store in SF. I live only a few blocks away from there. They make all custom bags in SF in just a couple days from the order.

[edit] Oh dang they now have the camera insert for XS size bags as well (great for M x 2 or M + lens kit). I better get that for my XS bags... :p

P.S. the one in my previous post is "Small" size.
