The pre-asph lux was too soft for me wide open. Great for bokeh and portraits of course.

Canon 50/1.4 is better (for me). Or a 35/2 (or even 1.4 = 2 additional stops in low light, compared to 50/2).

i had a pre-asph summilux and have the current summicron... as beautiful as the pre-asph draws i found it to be too soft for my purposes. i like the summicron better. hopefully one day i can get a 50 asph and have the best of both worlds.

I owned the latest pre-asph Summilux until last year. It produced gorgeous 'soft' images with only the centre truly sharp.

I loved owning the lens, but couldn't use it for wedding groups as the outer was too soft. Sent it back to Solms for checking and then traded it for a used Summilux Asph which was a dog!

Presume it was faulty, rather than typical. Returned it to the dealer, but my pre-Asph had gone and have ended up with a latest 'Chron for the time being.

Wish my original Lux was here. 😕

The Summicron is one of a very few lenses whose optical qualities cannot be faulted. Close range and far, its high contrast and resolution are consistent in ways that few lenses offer. You can't go wrong with one.

Unless you prefer a lens with personality. The pre-ASPH Summilux delivers personality in abundance. Soft corners wide open? Sure! Contrast suffers in the close focus range? You bet! Out of focus rendering gets a bit swirly and double-edged wide open? Absolutely! And yet, in spite of its faults, it delivers a subtle beauty that few other lenses can match. In B+W. In colour.
