Another Ken Rockwell wack

Without Rockwell, our hobby would be less fun. His contradictions and space alien paranoia add to our enjoyment, not take away from it. He is FAR less sanctimonious that many other paid-entry bloggers whose technical credentials mask banal photography IMO (LL).

I like reading Ken's site. I think he's funny, and I like his absolutisms and his delivery. Some of his funniest writings are about the Leica Man. Not only that, but beneath the surface curmudgingly charm, there is actual real useful information in many of his "reviews".

Anyway, I don't know why people are so fond of bashing him. If you don't like his style or his content, then don't read his site.

Hi,

It's always interesting how some people get indignant about something and then go back again and again for more. I guess they thrive on indignation. Or it's an excuse to look at porn...

I used to go to his website when I was just starting, he IS one of the first hits on ye Google after all. I'm not going to bash the guy, because his target market is not ours, it's the uncle bobs who wants their fix, he is basically the website version of the popular photo magazines.
He must get some credit because I believe that he does feed the family with his website only, and thats quite a feat IMHO. Now I do think its ironic that the dude with a lot of cameras preaches on "its not your camera its you..."
But personally I think he is a business, not a person, all this gear needs sponors, he's def on the payroll. His photography is not my cup of tea.

So he posts something provocative on his site, which provokes an entry on RFF and RFF readers click on his site to see what the fuss is all about. That's just crazy, man.

Hi,

More crazy are the ones who attack him without seeing and reading what he's written. Trouble is, that's the way things are done these days.

I think you need to take him with a grain of salt. I did learn some things when I spent a lot of time on his website. Looking back on his advice on the D40, I have enjoyed that camera and gotten some really good results with it.

However, I do come away from reading his site sometimes going huh?

His site is a great example of the internet business model. And he is VERY successful at it. If you don't believe it take a quick trip around to as many of the photo related forums that you can find and do a search on "rockwell." It is quite enlightening. It is also one the reasons his site pops up at the head of the list if you do a google search. He could do business seminars and get even richer. It is not about whether you are right or wrong, it is about how many hits you generate. And one reliable way to do that is to be as controversial as you can without being outright offensive. It has nothing to do with liking him or not. It is all about name recognition. Heck, in a few more years he may be able to run for President!

Hi,

Surely, getting people to read what you've written doesn't bring in money?

There must be more to it than that as I've posted a lot and, I guess, been read a lot on this forum and no cash has come my way yet...

And my posts and photo's elsewhere been looked at by the thousands but I'm still poor. So what's the secret of getting cash for visitors?

Regards, David
