Another project Leica fell in my lap - M2

Everclear is also good for cleaning lenses-learned that from a camera repairman.

Mudman, tell YY not to recover the camera-order some "Grip-Tac" from Cameraleather.com and recover it yourself. I was amazed how much it improved camera handling when I put it on my M3 and my GAF L-ES ( a vastly underrated camera).

Duly noted. Time is a rarity lately, 5.5 month old. I know it's not a giant job to do, but I barely have time to do anything right now besides take the photos, haha. The recover from Youxin will have to do.

Follow-up to my question about shipping

Follow-up to my question about shipping

I'm going to send my M2 for repair/CLA via FedEx, but the following is something I read about declared value at FedEx:

If shippers purchase additional coverage, it increases carriers’ financial liability. That allows shippers to recover more of their costs — as long as shippers can provide proof of value
(italics mine).

I'm more than a little paranoid about how I would be able to prove the value of the camera (it is cosmetically almost new) to FedEx's satisfaction if it were to be lost or damaged. I'm not aware of any reasonably local (Philadelphia/South Jersey) camera stores to which I could take it for an appraisal.

What are people doing when shipping Leicas - hoping for the best, using third party insurance (if so, what companies) or ???

Thanks in advance!

Insurance is expensive and as you say it can be problematical to collect on a loss. Many years ago the Post Office lost a Pentax LX and after some hassles would only pay out $500 maximum; maybe the numbers have changed in the years since.

I have noticed that company shipments to me use quick shipping methods and no insurance. So I now copy that: pay for the fastest shipping with no insurance, so that the package spends little or no time sitting around vulnerable to loss/theft while waiting to go somewhere else!

I had insurance work out great for me in the past. I bought a somewhat rare guitar amplifier, and the enclosure was damaged in shipping. It was around the holidays, I paid the extra insurance, got paid back and got to keep the amp. I still think the last part might have been a mess up on UPS end due to the holidays, but I was happy about it.

Did UPS base their reimbursement on the declared value for insurance or did you have to provide the receipt for the purchase?

My problem is that, although I can estimate the value based on on-line prices, the only proof of value I have is a receipt from 48 years ago.

Youxin's recover work is as good as you will find anywhere and better than most. He has recovered several M's and a IIIg for me and the work was perfect. I know Cameraleather well and have sourced material there for a couple of cameras; I use Youxin now if a new acquisition is in for a CLA.

My most recent project camera was a DS/SS conversion M3 that I bought via eBay for $250 (sometimes such a price is possible, a BIN yet), guaranteed to be functional by the seller.

The camera was, in fact, working properly when it arrived, even the slow speeds; my vendor was honest. It was also the dirtiest Leica that I had ever bought (or handled) and the skin was half gone (clear from the eBay photos). This may have been an instrument camera in an earlier life as it has a couple of unexplained threaded holes near the film gate.

Off my new jewel went to Youxin for a deep CLA. He agreed that it was dirty and imposed a surcharge for his additional work in putting things right. He worked real magic on the VF/RF brightness.

In the months which followed, a couple of ten cent springs broke on my new jewel (frame counter, for example). Youxin, being the gentleman that he is, repaired them under warranty. I have dry fired the camera for months now without a failure and am comfortable taking it into the field.

Good question, I don't really know. It was insured for what I had paid for it, and there were comps that I could easily show them as well.

Great news, the m2 is done! Youxin had even better news for me too, it does not have finder separation. It was mold. He has it cleaned out, the haze is gone, and everything is adjusted along with new leatherette. Should have it back next week.

Tracking says tomorrow. I'm excited. This is the first non-digital rangefinder that I've had with a magnification lower than .85. Curious to see how I like it.

Made it safe and sound. The packing job by Youxin was impeccable. Double boxed and with a return slip if needed. The recover is great too. Cannot wait to go shoot it!

There are a few signs of the fungus that was removed when looking in the front of the viewfinder, but the view itself is bright and clear.

Looks brand new to me. Just like mine looked the day I bought it new. I don't even see any meter MR scrapes.

Get it a nice Luigi case now! Use, it, Cherish it!

There are some scrapes and nicks and mr marks, but very minor. Loading up a roll of slide film and it may have its first paid shoot next week to boot!

I have a zhou case, but not sure if I am going to use one or not.
