Antanas Sutkus - The Lithuanian School of photography

In general I feel, eastern European photographers are less well-known and as a result undervalued, both here and on the web in general.

Pan, why not start a thread on these photographers on RFF? I’d do it myself but it’s hardly my place, coming from the Netherlands...

These unknown photographers are fun for me. In the USA we, in general, don't think anybody outside our country can spell 'cat.'

So being selfish, I would like to see more of these less known foreign photographers.

Also, thanks valdas for Romualdas Rakauskas, Aleksandas Macijauskas, Algimantas Kunčius.

Always interesting to find new unknown to me photographers, specially when they are very good.
I'll go through the photo after dinner!
ANd I'll look for the Sutkus book Lynn mentioned.

Edit: on Steidl website it is mentioned as "out of print"

Maybe a "Hall of Unknown Photographers" thread that people can post links with work of not so well known photographers?

Here is one to add, Mexican; born 1942:

Helen would have loved this one>

I had opportunity to visit an exhibition by Graciela Iturbide in Arles a few years ago. I was really impressed by her work, specially the photo taken in the house of Frida Kahlo and by her prortaits.

Here is an interestin short video (3 min) where she explain her work, her approach to the photography. Spanish language but with english subtitles:

The town I live in set up a large Antanas Sutkus retrospective exhibition in 2019. That was great with more than 200 vintage wet printed photos on four gallery floors. He was said to be at the vernissage, but couldn't make the trip due to his health eventually.

That time the vernissage was an interesting moment (which is quite rare...) because we could hear a speach from a curator who knew his work very well.
