Leica is suggesting that there will be a new Metz flash, perhaps even designed with the M8 in mind.
I'm hoping it is less of a monster (in size) than the current line of Metz flashes AND comes with an articulated head which the current Leica flash sorely needs. Even a simple tilt capability would be an improvement.
Any news on this at Photokina? Availability date? Price target?
Did Metz even have a booth at the show?
Thanks!

I don't mind the size as much as I do the features. I currently use a Vivitar 285HV on my R-D1 and it is quite bulky. Given the flash-TTL metering capabilities of the M8, I am hoping Metz comes out with a flash similar to the 580EX or SB-800. I specifically want:
- Rotate / Tilt
- Built in wireless communication with other flashes
- TTL chord for off camera use (hand holding, etc)
When I use a flash, I use the flash; I don't mind the bulk, it is a given. I want a decent amount of power that can easily support bounce flash off a wall or reflector. I love the capabilities of my canon SLR setup w/a 550EX and a 580EX, and long to have a similar setup that utilizes leica glass.
If Leica/Metz can do that, then I have the ideal camera setup. Multiple flashes for easily transportable portrait/studio shots, and the ultimate in travel & available light shooting.

There was a Metz stand at Photokina and I asked about a dedicated flash for the M8. The person was not especially helpful and gave me a catalog with the flash for the R9 in it.
I think the answer is that there is a flash coming, but nothing yet.
The Leica SF-24D (which I think is made by Metz for pennies) is as big as I would want to go for a camera mounted flash but I would certainly like increased capacity and an articulating head. The direct flash of the SF-24D is often much too harsh.
I don't think we'll get the complexity and fleixibility of the Nikon matrix-balanced fill flash and Creative Lighting System though... I'd be happy with well controlled and directed fill-flash and an IR camera mounted driver for off-camera flash.

I agree with Paul and Mark.
A small, lightweight controll-unit that will have wireless communication with my 3 MZ 54 units would be all I could hope for...
Cheers,
Peter

D'oh!
I doubt that Metz will make a deicated flash for the M8. Their product line is built around standard heads and interchangable modules for specific cameras. That's the attraction - I can use the same flash with my Nikon D200 and my Mamiya 645.

Absolutely right! And don't you think a universal light weight wireless control unit - via an adaptor - connected to your M8 would be ideal?
