Any news on the new Plustek 120 scanner?

Another reason to welcome another scanner is the longevity of film. You can find many threads on this forum and other fori decrying the death of film. If we were all limited to wet printing, how long would film last, especially 120 film.

Agreed. Without scanners or other digitizing methods, film would certainly be down to a handful of very expensive boutique offerings.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Ed Hamrick, Plustek and Kodak all got their heads together for a perfect scan every time. Aaaaah, wonderful! 🙂

I'm sorry but that is just absurd. There is nothing wrong with the 9000ED except the fact it has been discontinued and is freakishly expensive. I have thought about selling mine, and coming up with the extra $3,000-$5,000 for a good used Imacon 848 since I am doing 4x5 now, but those are hard to find.

Calling it overpriced is one thing, calling it worn out or burned out just makes no sense, it is a great tool. If you did not read the writing on the wall years ago like some of us did and get one for what was a decent price, you only have your self to blame.

Lets just wait and see what this so far vaporware new scanner actually does before we call it a step above the 9000ED...
 
And you can get repair parts where?

Ask the Minolta Scan Multi-Pro users where they can get replacement lamps...

My point being that this unsupported equipment has limited service life left in it. And lack of new supply means that old, used, worn-out machines go up in price as more become dysfunctional each year and diminish the pool.

I chose not to buy a new LS-9000 when they were $1800. I had no need for one. I certainly have no need for one at $5,000.

As I said earlier, the Plustek 120 does not have to be better than a Nikon 9000. It only has to be better than an Epson V-750.
 
Scanning plays a huge part in driving residual film sales.

The home developing and printing market was never enough to drive film demand, so scanners in the digital age contribute to film demand.

Many scan services rely on the Nikons and those are depreciating quickly that when the disappear, if there is no replacement, it's another problem for film.

So kudos to Plustek for trying to stay in the game and do it right (fingers crossed).
 
Hi Mark from Plustek here. There is some discussion on our Facebook page about a reseller in Finland getting OpticFilm 120 scanners to sell in a few days. No one at Plustek is sure where this reseller is getting their information from.

We are still on target for a September availability date.

Getting their information from or getting their scanners from?

Thats the problem with Plustek and Reflecta / Pacific Imaging in general though. Trade offices in the west, anonymous production in low-wage countries of the east.

That's a good question. The reseller says they are getting them from Germany. The manager for the German office isn't scheduled to get any until the September launch.

I can't comment about Pacific Image but at Plustek, we are all Plustek employees. There is a lot of communication with the product managers and other Plustek regions. All manufacturing is done in Plustek facilities by Plustek employees.

Nikon are still servicing the LS9000 and spare parts are not a problem. The machine was only discontinued last year - not twenty year's ago as your ridiculous scenario implies. These are machines that studios have, churning out scans day-in day-out for years on end. The vast majority of domestic users won't have any problem for maybe the next decade. It remains to be seen if the Plustek 120 will have the same sort of reliability.
 
Perhaps Your LS-9000 will go so high in value you can retire from the profit... All well for you if so.

But I am looking for a real-world solution. At least Plustek is interested in providing one.

Come on man, don't you think you are getting a bit dramatic? You are waaaay to caught up in the value thing, it is what it is, the effed up world of no more good deals thanks to ebay.

It's a great tool, it's too bad Nikon nixed it because it has truly given much higher priced scanners a run for their money. Nikon still supports it and will for some time. I made a nice cover for mine, occasionally blow the dust if any out and I am always gentle with the holders, what's not to love?

Aritophanes ( We miss you at APUG ) is right, a big part of film's survival is dependent on getting great scans out of it, so the Plustek offering could really help that out quite a bit.

I am not knocking the possibility of a new scanner on the market, but only a fool would complain about the 9000ED. At least you can find one, I can not for the life of me locate anything beyond an SCSI based Imacon-II.

Yes, of course.

Truthfully I don't give a crap about Nikons or Minoltas or Imacons or how much they sell for. You guys do whatever you wish with them. I am just glad to see new equipment coming to market.

If the Plustek is priced ridiculously I will not give a crap about them either.

They certainly have not been very forthcoming with pricing targets, which leaves me skeptical.
