I recently jumped back into the screwmount world (IIIF RD) courtesy of KEH and their 15% off sale.

I wear eyeglasses and I'm pretty sure I'm going to scratch the hell out of my lenses peering through the viewfinder. If this was an M camera, I'd just call DAG and order his plastic eyepiece ring for a few bucks. Someone please speak up and let me know what my options are for a IIIF - I have yet to find a product that will cover the viewfinder window to protect plastic coated eyeglass lenses.

My IIIf BD has a plastic cover for the finders. I thought that's normal for IIIf and that only IIIc Leicas had metal eyepieces.

There are plastic eyepieces on eBay though.

That's interesting, my last ltm was a iiic and it definitely had a metal eyepiece. I just assumed that all models would be the same. It sure looks metal though- is there an easy way to check?

The plastic eyepieces are textured. The metal ones seem to have no texture (never saw one in person).

Try to scratch it with your finger nail. You should feel if it's plastic as it's rather softish (more then metal 😛 )

Edit: if you are brave enough, take a needle/pin and scratch it 😉 (or unscrew the eyepiece and try to scratch its back side... watch out! Especially the rangefinder lens is loose and falls out easily! Taking off the eyepiece is also a great way to clean the finder lenses with a Q-tip and some cleaning solution)

My IIIf also has plastic frames around the two eye pieces. For my IIIa and my Zorkiis, I use the gummed reinforcements that you use to keep holes punched in paper from pulling out.
