Since we are an anachronistic bunch, I wondered if there are any other shortwave listeners out there. I just recently read an interesting article and decided to purchase a cheap portable.

Hi Jamzip, I sometimes listen to Radio Havana for the music. I use a Sangean radio for monitoring shortwave, but I have a bunch of older radios going back to a 1937 Hallicrafters with shortwave capabilities. Sometimes I just cruise the frequencies and try to identify languages and countries I hear along the way. It's fun. Is that your Vdub in your avatar? We have a New Beetle Turbo here.

I was beginning to wonder when someone would respond to this. I became interested in shortwave after reading this:

Interesting article. I started looking around online and decided to get a cheap shortwave. Found a well reviewed Kaito on amazon for only $15! So far I am pleased with it, but having an analog dial it is hard to determine exactly what stations I am listening to. I've picked up chinese, japanese, spanish, german, I think italian and french, and some sort of nordic language. Gotta get a digital tuner so I can see exactly what frequency I am listening to!

That's our '04 passat wagon in the pic. We also have a '94 jetta. I can't make out what you've got in your avatar, looks like a motorcycle? I've got an '03 MZ Skorpion Tour.

Digital tuning makes finding a station very much easier, although I enjoy finding a station on the old analog radios too because it is a real process, not unlike taking photos with a film rangefinder. For a real retro blast check out some of the old military AM communications receivers. The Collins 390a weighed about 85 pounds. I saw a guy buy one of these at a radio fest. He was struggling to carry it back to his vehicle. I asked if he wanted help but he declined. I guess he thought it was his initiation for buying the old boat anchor!

As far as pirate stations go, you never know what you might hear, or where, or when. You should find a copy of "world listeners guide" for broadcast frquencies and schedules.
My avatar is an unintentional triple exposure I made with a Konica I camera of a Harley parked on the street near our last house. Pitxu called it "Picasso's Harley". 😎

I had a general class ham license in my youth - back in the 13 wpm code requirement days. I've often though about getting back into this or perhaps just getting a good general coverage receiver. It's a fun way to pass time (which I don't really have anymore!)
