Any super wide alternatives within reason?

I think that the 12 mm give always the same photographyc effect. There are other wide lens very interesting the voigtlander 28 F3.5: compact, very solid, excellent quality of image.
 
Another option is a 16mm Zenitar, which is a M42 lens. They are about $100-120 new. I have one that I use on my Canon SLRs and it's fine. The trouble is, once you add on a M42-M39 adapter and then get a viewfinder of some sort, you might as well pick up a CV lens used.

Put a WTB on photo.net. I did and got a CV 21/4 in very nice condition for $250.
