Any way to make a Nikon S2 quieter?

Mine is kinda loud as well, something you have to get used to,
I did clean out the bottom of the camera, I just blew out the dust
a little with a blower (Bulb) and it sounded a little more quiet, but
it could be my imagination (?).

Lower or "half" case

Lower or "half" case

A couple of my S2s came with the leather case (nifty depth-of-field card in the split lining, too). The lower half of it does make the camera quite a bit quieter, as well as a bit easier to grip if you have big hands (like I do). I would not trust any of the Fifties-vintage straps at all, but the cases hold up well, at least the bottoms, and re-strapping is easy.

Remove the shutter brake?
Pretend to take photos but don't actually fire the shutter?
Convert it into an SP?
Convert it into cash?

:D

Ha ha Jon

No, converting it to money right now isn't the thing to do.

I just got it, to pair up with a 5cm f1.1 internal mount.

I'll try to post photos of it soon.

The body is very nice, although it needed a CLA for the 1 second and realignment of the RF. But judging from the amount of corrosion that I found in the body, I think the shutter bearings are rougher than they should be.

That is a much bigger job than I want to do.

Convert it into cash?

I was going to type a very snappy remark, but then I read that the camera was NOT in the best shape.

Yet, if you wanna hear loud cameras, try the Contax G bodies. Whirr and clack beyond belief. Best of luck!

Vick,
Send the S2 to me. I will exhaustively test it for excessive noise and as an added benefit you won't be able to hear the camera with me about 2000 miles away. :D

My S2 is smoother but maybe slightly louder than my Ti shuttered SP. Neither of them is loud at all though. Quiet enough to shoot on a subway, bus or trolley in Philly and all over the NYC subway system without being noticed.

If it's too loud, get a CLA and a leather half case.

Hello all
Just popped the bottom and lubed up the exposed mechanisms, and it is a lot quieter. The shrill squeak of the second curtain is now resolved.

Checked the shutter speeds too, and they are almost bang-on.

I'm now very happy with this body.

Hello, depending on the location, shutter oil or helix grease, both from Fargo Industries. They sell camera repair supplies.
