hey all, I picked up this camera a while ago for a few bucks at a garage sale but haven't been able to find out anything about it so I was hoping somebody here would know what it is, also does anybody know what the round thing on the top with numbers inside it is? when pressed down it can be rotated. Thanks!

and one last thing :p, anybody know where I could get a take up spool for it?

40mm lens? Indeed. The film gate is supposedly 51mmx51mm, meaning its rather on the wide side.

... which would be even more surprising given that it takes 35mm film.

It is near the bottom end of Soviet 35mm's, and at least mine takes Rapid cartridges which have become extremely scarce by now. There may have been 135->135 cartridge feeding ones as well - but common to all Smenas I've come across is a cartridge to cartridge transport that does away with the need for a rewind knob (and if they start saving on rewind knobs the camera is cheap indeed).

I've got the Smena 8 variant (badged as a "Cosmic 35"):

This is 35 mm (with a rewind knob!) and although I've only ever put one film through it, the lens is remarkably good (MUCH sharper than the one I had on a LOMO LC-A), the exposures were spot on, no light leaks and the frame spacing also perfect and regular!

My mistake, mistook the information on the linked Soviet camera site. I had a later Symbol myself, which had the more traditional wind and rewind system.
