Anybody using 0.58x Leicas?

I had 1 but sold it after a few months. For me 35mm is wide enough for most purposes & a 0.72 & even a 0.85 finder can handle 35mm, though it was nice to have some room around the 35mm framelines on the 0.58. Also, I have a Hexar RF body that's pretty close to 0.58 (0.6 I think), so the M6 was kind of redundant.

I think the only people who use the 0.58s are using a pretty wide lens like a 28 a lot of the time. I've read that the viewfinder on a .58 flares quite a bit but I've never used one myself. I like my 28 on the 0.72 - it works well for me.

I use a 0.58 MP. I like the viewfinder a lot as I wear glasses and I can see the 35mm frame lines and the space around it without much effort. The space is one of the important reasons I use a rangfinder instead of a SLR.

Tried 0.72 with the 35mm, just too much time spent trying to see the frame lines.

My M6TTL is a .58. My normal lens is a 35, for me the relationship between the 35 frame and the outside of the finder is just perfect; also perfect is the fact that the 35 frame is alone (no 135 on the .58). Can't stand a cluttered finder with the frame lines close to the edge.

The .58 finder actually flares the least of all the non-condenser corrected finders - the .85 the most.

Still, it's not everyone's idea of a good thing; but I certainly like it.....

I have a .58 and a .85, best of both worlds I guess. I find it easier to compose with the 35mm on the .85 vs. the .58.(wow this could get confusing). I do wear glasses but not when shooting. I have diopters in both camers. If using two bodies I will have my 28mm Elmarit on the .58 and a 50mm on the .85. One camera one lens would be the 35mm on the .85 body, or the 28mm on the .58.

If I am using the 35mm on the .58, I really don't "get close enough" for some reason.

Hope that helps,
Corry

Based on long experience with 35mm on my M2, where the 35mm framelines are difficult even without glasses, I'd look forward to getting more "elbow room" with a .58x finder, and that would certainly be my choice in a Leica body, and indeed a major reason to get another. The .72x is great with 50mm. I also have a .6x Minolta CLE body, which has a bit of space even around the 28mm framelines, a good thing because 28mm has become a favorite!

I find the 0.72 next to perfect... although, in short distances, using the 28mm lens with any of my 0.72 cameras is difficult because of the lens protruding into the FOV of the VF.

But... I'm happy with my magnification.

Is it possible the M6 .72x viewfinder has a wider field of view than the M2's, despite having the same magnification? I'm having a hard time imagining 28mm framelines in my M2, where the 35mm framelines are so far out they're only visible in their entirety in peripheral vision even without glasses. Puzzling... I've heard it said that framelines for any given focal length are smaller in the M6 than in the M2, and represent less of the image on film... true?
