Anyone ever use a Canon 85/1.9 with CL?

Plus there just isn't any way that you can finess that short of an effective baselength to reliably focus a fast long lens wide open. I can imagine using a 50/1.5 on mine and intend to try a Canon one someday, but honestly, I'd say the fastest long lens I'd be willing to try is the 90/2.8 Elmarit.

The CL has many virtues - long fast lens support is not one of them... 😱

Ok, I'll bite. No I have not used either of those lenses. I do use a Canon 135/3.5 wide open rather regularly and my sucess rate is about 2/3's. Even if the focus is correct the wieght of that lens (lower than either of those) makes holding steady a very difficult proposition and shake abounds in those shots. As a result I don't do long, fast & wide on a CL. On the basis of my experiance, I wouldn't, as I noted up thread, even try anything faster than a 90/2.8. I'm not sure that would work, but I'd at least try it if I had one available. I wouldn't even bother with trying the two 85's you mention.

Thanks William and Roland,

Let's consider 5 meters at f2, with ~40cm DOF. Any problems with a CL or Bessa. What about 2.8 at 3-5 meters?

I've used a Jupiter 9 85 / 2 on the CL wide open.

This was taken from about 5 metres:

This was taken from about 7 metres:

This was taken from about 3 metres:

Film used was Capitol 400, which has really large grain.

These pictures exhibit some motion blur from hand movement (they were taken at 1/125s, but I have unsteady hands), so they are not the best examples to evaluate focusing ability with. If you are not looking for extremely sharp photos, shooting at a low enough speed will negate focusing mistakes in any case, and you might be able to live with the product.

This was exactly the info. I needed. Elmarit is on my watch list. Thanks!

Hi Ted,

5 meters will be fine at f2. 2.8 at 3-5 meters will be fine as well. I have used a 90/2.8 Tele Elmarit on an R2
very close wide open (1m or so) frequently. Almost no misses. BTW, I love the Elmarit, and these
days it's not so expensive.

Roland.
