Anyone prefer their LTM to their M?

Leica II in black w/collap. Summicron plus SBOOI
I bought an M2 to maybe check out the newer
glass, but it's so BIG.
A trick on loading LTMs: use the Leica locking
cable release on B, remove lens. It's easy to
load with the shutter open! No trimming even
with bulk loaded.

I've had both cameras off and on over the years, dozens in fact. I think my problem with using the LTM cameras has mostly been that I don't take them seriously enough and want to pretend it's a casual snapshot camera whereas they actually require some thoughtful consideration to be used successfully.

The way I've over come it, somewhat, is to be a bit harsh and leave all the other cameras at home and then do a sort of prayer-litany not unlike using a view camera where you follow a mental checklist and then be ready for serendipities. We've been so conditioned by modern cameras to wait for the "decisive moment" but we forget that we need to do some decisive preparation first!

They do get a lot faster with use and you do adapt to seeing through the finder, picking one of the only five possible outdoor exposures, and occasionally zone focusing when you don't have a good subject for RF focusing.

Now I'm a bit of a bigot and see the enlarged RF window and separate viewfinder(s) as a large advantage over M-bodies and SLRs.

Been using a IIIc for about six months now, and having decent LTM glass, it's been really fun to work with. The M's have just been sitting. I'm sure I'll go back to them, but the size of the LTM body, and it's jewel like construction, really have made using a Barnack a joy.

Best,
-Tim

I love my IIIc - it's compact, well built, and beautiful to look at. I think of my M6 along the same lines, except it's much more "user friendly". As silly as it sounds, I shoot my IIIc to enjoy the "quirks" of shooting it.

Hari, To paraphrase Mae West...."Is that an LTM in your pocket or are you happy to see me.?" I can't imagine carrying a camera in the front pocket of my pants and at the same time having it ready for photos i don't want to miss.

And the lint... The usb and audio ports of my phone get clogged by it, what does it do to a machanical camera? I don't want to know. I used to carry the Ricoh GR in my front pockets, that probably wasn't good for it either. But being able to carry a camera like that is great, even if it isn't ready to use instantaneously. I felt inconspicuous (just happy to see you!) and it's much easier and also less conspicuous to pull out than from some sort of bag. Today I'd try a silk bag for lint protection.
Ok, to stay somewhat on topic, I haven't tried any Barnackish camera, I use a Canon P and a 7, where does that leave me? While they are ltm, in function they're closer to an M. I would use a Barnack if I were given one, but I don't think I'll seek one out. While I do value compactness, a pocket camera for me needs a wider lens than a 50, and with external finder, the compactness is lost. So might as well use something with grown up ergonomics, and cheaper to get than the Leica ltms and perhaps cheaper to maintain than all (will never need new curtains, cheap enough for me to dare DIY repairs).

As to Lint... It gets on the viewfinder and rangefinder windows front and back. I use a blower to clean them and occasionally a careful cleaning with alcohol on a Q tip. A Leica IIIc and 50mm Elmar F3.5 is a marvelous companion and will fit into the front pocket of my jeans without making a terrible lump. The Leica with Summitar will fit but makes a much more obvious lump in your pocket. I've gotten some lovely pictures by carrying my IIIc that way. Joe

There’s just “something” about the prewar German build. My newest Leica (aside from UR and Null Replicas), was my first, a 1946 build IIIc. It was my One camera for everyday use for 20 years. I always felt it was a camera I could hang from a neck strap, go anywhere and Never need to “apologize” for my camera.

I have not come across a black one but noticed the silver SBOOI's have doubled and almost tripled in price!

I have an original SBOOI in black paint, but guess what? I've never seen another one. Must have been made on special order.

I use it on all my LTM-Leica's, also when they have no thread mount.

The Nikon S2 has a SBOOI built in. Works incredible.
