looking to get a half frame... the canon demi seems to be the cream of the crop but im not sure i want to shell out $250+ for a quality one.

anyone else have suggestions, or currently using one?

I have a Oly Pen FT (not a rangefinder) and a Fuji Half which is a rangefinder. I don't know how available the Fuji Half is, and I am ashamed to say that I have not shot it yet.

I shoot half frame. Sometimes with the Samurai's, but mostly with the original Olympus Pen. They bring both challenge and calm to my life.

currently using a Pen EE-3 and FT from my wife's Pen collection. she's determined to complete the Pen series. i get to take them apart and do a bit of CLA. 😀

amazing how you can still get a sharp detailed print from half a 35mm frame.

I have shot a few rolls with a ricoh "Auto half S". It's about the size of an Olympus XA but a bit thicker. Beautiful "retro" design. Crappy little vewifinder, though, and with some dust in the finder. BUT, I've been amazed at the sharpness of the lens (it is fixed focus, everything from about 5 ft. on is in focus).

HOWEVER, as I have so many more versitile full-frame cameras in my cupboard, it just doesn't get used anymore.

If someone out there wants it, I'll sell it to you cheaply - I don't know, $15? I bought it for $40, but I was probably being a bit of a fool at the time (impulse)...

I have quite a large collection of 1/2 frame cameras, Pen, Canon, Ansco, Yashica. etc.. I love them all. Each has its own wonderful qualities. I shoot commercially and for myself with them.

Some examples -

I use an Agat 18. It's scale focus and non-metered. I like it for when I don't want to lug around anything heavy. Haven't used it lately as the half frame size confuses the local lab.
It's a fun cheap camera! There is a Japanese photographer who (if I'm understanding the BabelFish translator correctly) seems to be comparing the lens favorably with his Leicas. 🙄
The lens is OK but it sure ain't that good.

I use a Pen FT, Pen D3 and a Canon Demi EE17. One of these days I hope to finish repairing a Dial 35.

Improvements in film have benefitted half-frame; surprising how well it can do these days. I had a Pen D2 long ago, and occasionally use a pair of FT's and an FV with several lenses.

I have just aquired a demi 17 and a Pen D and didn't pay too much for either, they aren't perfect but are good users, keep checking ebay and you should find a demi for $100US or even sometimes less.
i think the Demi17 may have the edge over the olympus in terms of usability but the Pen is smaller and neater. i really want aa F but they do seem to go for far too much money.
good luck with your search

This discussion is very timely...If anyone here wants to buy an original and unmolested Demi (the one with the 2.8 lens & a working meter), please tell me. Mine is still in its original carry case with the original manual, the original Canon wrist strap and Canon lens cap too. It still looks almost like new...it still has the little P/C plug cover, too. To be 100%, I suppose it could use new light seals, but I don't think they leak. I just never got around to changing them. $75 and shipping. If you're interested, please send a PM.
