Anyone still shoot with their SLR's?

My rangefinders get stiff competition from the Contax RTS travel kit: Aria, D28/2.8, P50/1.4 and S100/3.5. The Aria is actually 100g lighter than my M4! I have a broad range of CZ lenses, but standard focal lengths get all the action. The unifying theme in my gear is manual focus and primes: AF zooms need not apply. 🙂

If I go "on a shoot" (sounds fancy, but basically I mean if I intend to lay in a gutter snapping pics of skateboarders flying by), I'll bring my Minolta XG-M and Viv 135/2.5. SLR's seem better for shooting skating, and the long lens works well for this. But I do enjoy shooting skating with the Rapid Omega.

If I'm heading out street shooting, or just taking a camera with me when I'm heading out, I only take the Canon 7s and CV 35/2.5.

(but to answer the question, yes =) )

What i've noticed once, i have used an autofocus slr to 'document' some beach volley tournament of friends of mine, and exactly one year later i've used a yashica gsn to do the same. sure i had to crawl closer with the gsn, no 135mm lens available, BUT - the images with the slr were always somewhere around the right moment (you know, ball just out of picture frame), while with the yashica in almost all cases they were exactly in the right moment.
how's that for "rangefinders not good for sports photography" 🙂

All I've got to say is "Wow!" you're right. Not one you could stroll through a crowd unnoticed.
I'm considering the ARAX-60 MLU standard kit. Is the price still $299? Also, did you get it with the ARAX 80/2.8, and if so, is the lens a good one?

Ted
Ted,
According to the Arax web site(ARAX PHOTO ), yes the basic kit is still $299.
I did get the 80mm lens and it's pretty good, I think. Small, sharp and relatively easy to find 62mm filter size. One caveat: there is a DOF lever on this lens(as on most of the FSU glass for this camera) which will let in stray light at closest focus. The elegant fix is to remove it. What I did is to simply cover it with black electric tape. There is a DOF preview switch on the body of the Arax-60 so you won't miss the lever on the lens.

obviously, i HAVE owned slr's in the past but presently have no need for them.

every time i think i need one it turns out it's for a pic that someone else wants me to do for them.
for my own stuff, a body + 35/50/100 is all i need.

thank goodness for the canon p!

Canon FTbN
Canon FX

All depending on my mood. Recent choice in Gettysburg - Bell & Howell / Canon FD 35 with Canon FL 58mm f1.2 lens.

I shoot digital PnS, DSLR, SLR, fixed-lens and interchangeable-lens rangefinders as it suits me -all cheese to me!

My honor has been besmirched; I slept in...🙂
Can we reschedule for say late January or sometime in February? As long as we're going through the rigors of this duel I was thinking about neutral ground -- maybe Florida or Hawaii? A few days for preparation, site location, etc. will be necessary, of course.

I could never get enthused about 35mm SLRs. I keep looking at them but, for 35mm work, I would rather use my rangefinders. However, I have a 2 medium format SLRs, both Salut-Ss, and 2 large format Graflex SLRs (3x4 and 4x5). I love the Salut-S and am waiting on a darkroom so that I can shoot the big Graflexs.

Still shooting with OMs, and have at least 3 bodies that need CLA. Besides the superb ergonomics and handling, the big, beautiful viewfinders are a joy. I don't have an OM-4 or OM-3, but maybe if I win the lottery...
