I know the Lensholder M is designed for the regular film M, but has anyone used it on their M9 or M8? Does it mount decently with the lens being on the side? Are there any alternatives for the M8/9?

I doubt it - the lensholder is for film Ms, that have an offset tripod bush. The M8/9 has a central tripod bush and a bottom plate of different dimensions. It can never fit.

not the leica lens holder but I modified the Benser lens holder originally for the M3.

I still find it useful when using two lens combination of either 35/75 or 50/90

I've never had the courage to hang a couple of expensive Leica lenses from the baseplate (many eggs/one basket) nor wanted the added weight and bulk (might as well an SLR with a zoom), but I always admire a good job of DIY engineering, so you've definitely got my praises!

i learn something new everyday--but, man, i wouldn't want to use one of these. i can only imagine it leading to bad things, including a heavier camera and damaged lenses. that may just be me, though.

For compact lenses its surprisingly comfortable and usable. It allows me to travel quickly out the door without a bag... simply pickup the camera with lenses, throw the strap over my shoulder, and throw a spare battery in pocket as I head out the door. In my mind, its truly the most simple way to carry the camera (and still have more than 1 lens).
As for securing lenses, the lenses are never just loose in a bag or in pocket. I don't have to fumble around for them. I have never come close to dropped a camera nor a lens used in this fashion. The lenses are either attached to the lens mount, lens carrier, or firmly in hand for only a short period of time. Switching is a single hand operation and fairly quick. In contrast, I have dropped one lens once.... when I was trying to quickly get into a belt pouch (it was repaired luckily only lost the filter). It might not be obvious in the pictures but the carrier has a locking mechanism much like the camera's mount itself. You hear a distinct "click" confirming that the lens is locked into the carrier securely. There are two separate levers on the carrier to release the lens independently.

The only complaint I have is that there is no way to access the battery or SD compartment without dismantling and removing the carrier. Oh yeh... its not the prettiest but that is not my main concern. Anyone who has seen it in person hasn't really complained. lol
Again... not for heavier lenses and of course.... its a personal preference.

Forgot to mention...
A while back there was another thread with a fellow who hacked and drilled a recessed hole in the Leica single lens carrier to fit to the center tripod mount of an M8. The issue is that I need two lens carrier even though I don't plan to hold three lenses. Without a "spare" lens mount, what would you do with the removed lens while in the middle of switching lenses? You either have to drop one into a pocket or use two hands with the camera hanging from your neck. Either way seems a bit clumsy.
