anyone using the fuji extension tubes?

I have not used the fuji rings but I used to use the Contax SLR ones when I had that system.

The fuji rings seem too expensive for what they are but there is a bigger issue.
When you get that close in a real mechanical manual focus lens is important.
When I had the 60mm I was surprised how horrible it was to focus by wire up close. It's awful.
With a cheap adapter, I have a macro Planar 60mm I use which goes to 1:1. It's not a cheap lens But I already owned it.

The excellent and inexpensive OM 55mm f3.5 is available for under $100.
So is the wicked good Super Takumar f4/50mm.
An OM and M42 adapter is only about $15 for fuji FX mount.

whether they are worth the bucks, i can't tell - that's something you need to know yourself. but i'm certain you know that already.

I haven't used the Fuji ones but I do have a set of 'clones' made by Viltrox at about 1/3 the price. They are electronically coupled but I agree that manual focus is still the method of choice. I don't use them much so I can't comment on their longevity, but at the price they seem OK.

i was curious about people's experience using the tubes...did they work without problems, were they a pita?
i know there are cheaper alternatives but having an oem piece of kit can be easier and therefore worth the price.
i am unsure i want to pay 110 cdn but i'm thinking that some indoor winter macro shooting might keep the cabin fever at bay.
 
ah, ok.

well, they actually work. the availability of AF is useful for "quick-and-dirty" focussing. it works acceptably well if you use the AF button in MF mode. i the result doesn't satisfy, do it again.

i should mention, that i am not too critical in my close focus works, and i am not interested in "real" macro (that is, 1:1 and larger).

i guess it depends - if you are serious on macro, a real (manual) macro will be the better way to go.

i also have an adapter ring M-to-fuji X bayonet.
it also works somehow, but it feels a bit flimsy. however, it was cheap, and it is a infinite-to-close up solution for immediate access to all distances (without unmounting the lens, adding the close up ring, and re-mounting the lens).

might be an acceptable approach, too.

let me find that stuff and prepare some examples. may take a few days - when do you want to decide? do i need to hurry?

hey joe, here you go - some very quick close up samples of a well known object.

first two pictures with the summicron 35mm (version 2) at closest distance, wide open and f/11

second two both at f/11, maximum and minimum distance with the 11mm close focus ring and the fujinon 35mm f/1.4.

by the way, i prefer not to use autofocus, but manually set distance and then adjust the camera position ... (i only forgot until i took the example pictures, didn't use this setup for a long while).

if this is not enough, let me know what you want to see.

I have the 10mm and 16mm auto extension tubes for my Fuji X-Pro1. However, they are not Fuji brand and only cost me $15 each on eBay.

I rarely use them because I tend to use my manual focus Nikon macro lenses for most of my close-up/macro work. One of the rare times when I use the auto extension tubes is when I am shooting portraits in the field with my X-Pro1 and my 56mm Fuji lens and need close-ups of body parts.

I was recently thinking about using some of my OM extension tubes and with a variety of Zuikos, as well as the Zuiko 50/3.5, all with the OM->F adapter, of course. Maybe I'll do some quick and dirty this weekend and post. My thinking was also that manual focus would be critical and it's easier to accomplish with a legacy lens. And I'm not paying for FX mount extension tubes just to experiment, even cheaper 3rd party.
 
went to the local pro shop today and it was very quiet...considering there should be some sort of christmas rush this time of year, i have to admit that it's a bit scary seeing business so slow...what would i do on saturdays if there was no real camera store in town to visit and chat with the clerks?
anyway, after all that i forgot to look at the extension tubes...i looked at the new fuji 90 (which was on sale for 150 off regular price)...wish there was room on the old cc...i asked about the hood for the 16 and decided that if i plan on keeping that lens then i should have a proper hood on the thing...so i ordered one...79 bucks canadian...better than i anticipated.
should i manage to get a 90 i think i'll be as close to 'done' as i ever have been...getting old and feeling the financial pinch both have something to do with that...plus i imagine that eventually i'll have to serious up some and start making some decent images and stop messing with the gear end of things as much as i do. (not there is anything wrong with that...)
