Depends on what you're comparing it with.

Most of my Nikon DSLR lenses don't even have an aperture ring 😉 , and those that do are like the X100.

Nope, NIKKORs have aperture the same way (which is opposite to the most of manufacturers). As a matter of fact all functions go the other way - zoom, focus, exposure comp. etc (on Nikons that is)).

That makes no sense, since Nikon F and Leica M aperture rings already turn in opposite directions.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure my F3's AR turned the same way as my Ms...

Exactly the same as my Pentax lenses, and with the aperture ring close to the body, with the manual-focus ring in front. Makes it easy for the Pentax users!

Only for Leica people. The X100 apparently uses the original Zeiss Ikon Contax direction, which was adopted by Nikon after WWII.

Not sure why Fuji is doing that w/the X100, since most of their cameras use the standard "Leica" direction. Maybe an attempt @ capturing Nikon fans?

It suggests that whoever decided upon that is more familiar with their (former) S-series DSLRs (which were Nikon compatible) than with any of the (medium format and panoramic) rangefinders from Fuji.

It is back-assward, but then so is the shutter speed dial; so at least the camera's consistent in its wrongness. 😉

I know this is really bad, but this is the only thing making me think twice about buying this...

I never use my digital Ms in anything other than A shutterspeed because I just can't get my head around the direction.

Having the same problem with the X100 for BOTH will do my head in!

Am I the only one that is bothered by full stops only?
I know, I know... but all the trouble to make the camera appear as mechanical as possible and then do full stops on the ring. Ya ain't fixing that with you fancy firmware updates...

I initially also found that irritating, until I read somewhere that you can indeed adjust in 1/3 EV increments by using the command lever. A bit strange, but the capability's there if you need it.

I've already written digital cameras, at least ones like X100, must use backlit LCD to customize controls by wish of user. As it's controlled by processor, where's problem to allow setting direction of aperture ring and display values on it as user wants? 2..16 or 16.2 - processor should do this easily.

The aperture ring works by activating switches. Each stop engages one switch. So 1/2 stops would require twice as many switches. Adds to the complexity.

As to the direction- some cameras go one way, others go opposite of that. Only two ways to turn a dial. I'm happy with the choice. It is the same as a Zeiss SOnnar, Nikon S-Mount, Nikon F, and many others that I use.

Well, the X100 is the same as my Yashica GSN, but to be honest, I have never noticed in all the years of using manual glass; the rotation of the aperture.
