Newly purchased Nikon 7. What do I have?

Recently purchased Nikon S (impulse buy). The serial number is 7 digit but starts with 610xxxx. The serial number inside the back matches. From what I have read, all 610 serail numbers should be 8 digits. I'm confused. Can someone enlighten me?

Looks correct to me, I'm pretty sure all of the 8 digit serials start with 6091xxxx, beyond some later oddities.

610 is a standard 7 digit s. yours with the 3 9's would be desirable to a number collector, (not me any more). Jim

You read wrong!
Nikon S with 61xxxxx serial number is always 7 digits.

For that matter, most of ALL Nikon Rangefinder cameras of vintage era have 7 digit serial numbers. The trick is to find a Nikon rangefinder with 5 or 6 digit serial number!

There are some Nikon S cameras with 8 digit serial numbers but those start with 609xxxxx

Nice number btw, can use a bit of cleaning for sure.
