are FSU optical finders worth ...

Yes, the 35 mm viewfinder is very good, can't tell if it's worth of 40$ since the highest price for it here in Russia is 10$ but it is a very nice to use one.

The Russian finders are all fine - not fancy, but they do the job for most work. You can save money by buying more than one item from the bigger FSU photo sellers on eBay and negotiate combined shipping - I've always been able to work this sort of deal with them.

I use the round universal finder made in Japan on my Zorki. Has lines for 35mm & 135. Only cost me 10 bucks. Much better than the russian kind but not quite as good as cv. CV finders are the best.

Paul, I use a finder from Petri 7, the lines are good [35 & 85 ]and I use on FSU, 6x9 folder and an SLR for infra red stuff. Cost very little and does the job just fine.

Hi,

I'll second the comments about the Japanese "Helios" VF and add that they are still around brand new, if you search. Mine came with a neat little black case for the camera strap and frame-lines for 35, 85 and 135mm lenses.

Paying a lot more or getting lucky on ebay etc, the ex-USSR clone (by KMZ) or improved Contax 1930's universal finder takes a lot of beating. It covers 28, 25, 50, 85 and 135mm lenses with parallax adjustment for 1 metre and a central cross hair. But check for the right version as they come right handed and left handed. For a Leica etc you need the one with the barrel on the left of the shoe's foot.

Regards, David
