Are SD cards less reliable when aging?

While investigating the sub that imploded near the Titanic, they found an intact SD card sitting on the ocean floor. Camera was toast, but the card was intact, with pictures, although not of the event in the sub. This card seems to be the only thing that survived intact and functional. Yes, this is a bit different than the original question. The cards seem to be pretty sturdy though.

I occasionally encounter SD card errors when attempting to format with camera or PC. But sometimes, they just need lower-level formatting using a tool such as this one from the SD association. This is a much more time-consuming process than the usual quick format, but it can restore cards which are seemingly damaged.
