Are you hoarding?

quite the contrary…i try my best to be a minimalist…spare kit that i use and if i don't use it i usually sell it.
i have my regular fuji digital kit…a small rf kit and a small slr kit…the rf/slr for a change of pace film experience.
i regularly purge myslef of things…if i haven't worn it then i throw it out/give it away…
i look forward to the day when i live in one big room somewhere with everything i own in sight.
Wow that's frightening because I feel the same way.🙄

"Hoarding" always imparted some level of fear (unfounded or not) to me -as in one who is afraid that something would never be available to them if they did not hold on to it.

By my own definition then, I do not hoard gear. I do, however, have a spare fridge/freezer that has a nice selection of film. I buy it just about any chance I get from the locals to help keep the tap running. At least that is what I think when I buy it.

I tend to hoard film. When I see film I like going cheap I buy some and stick it in the fridge. I probably have too many lenses but not way too many. I keep meaning to sell the Nikon 35mm f1.4 AIS but never seem to get round to it.

Had the OP said "Are You Conserving" he'd not have provoked so much response ... sorry stimulated so much response

Yes, I have many fine lenses that I don't really use much, but don't want to let go. Half the time I've sold a lens, I regret it a couple years later, and then can't afford to re-purchase it. However, I'm planning to down some liquid courage, and list a bunch of lenses, in hopes of freeing up enough cash to buy a used M9. Just need to avoid selling the lenses that will really perform nicely on the aforementioned M9. 😉

Hoarding is probably a little harsh. Keeping for a change of scene sounds better 🙂.
I have 3 M's sitting unused with 5 M lenses.
2 SL's that get sporadic use with 4 R lenses.
An F5 I haven't used in a while and my Nikon D set up with 4 pro lenses.

I've learnt from experience that selling kit just because it's not being used is the wrong reason as sooner or later I will return to it.
I sold off all of my MF Nikon gear, had 9 bodies at one point, F through to F4 in multiple configs plus a load of good Nikon glass and definately wish I hadn't in some cases. Why? because I ended up buying another F2 and a couple of F3's and the same 28 and 50 I sold previously!
It's only a matter of time with some cameras and lenses before I go full circle and start using them again.

"Conserving" always imparted some level of preservation (unfounded or not) to me -as in one who is afraid that something would never be available to future generations if they did not take care of it.

... that is why I commented ... the choice of Hoarding in the title is pejorative I feel

I didn't think I was hoarding until I moved into a small London flat, then I felt like everything was out of control. It has forced me to decide what I really can't bear to part with and then sell everything else. Painful, but necessary. A lot of my LF kit will go, along with half of my MF.

I have more than I will ever (completely) use in my lifetime...it bothers me at times and at other times it doesn't...I took some gear to a local Camera Show where a Big camera dealer was buying...after he was done looking over my stuff and gave me his price, I thanked him, gathered up my gear and left...I would rather keep it than give it away knowing what they will be selling it for...
It may be hoarding but I look at it as my own little museum...and museums don't hoard...

After probing digital M as an alternative to my DSLR kit, and deciding I liked it, yeah, I think I've accumulated more lenses than I'll use on a regular basis. At least those I do use, are the pricy ones. Not because of that, but because I like them best from a performance perspective.

I feel over the last few years the slow rise of mirrorless has resulted in platform options that find new uses for legacy glass. And if there is a lesson from this, it's that what's seemingly an ill fit or unusable at the moment, might find new life in the near future with some yet unknown system. Therefore, I do feel reluctant to sell lenses simply because I'm not using them much at the moment. For most cameras, I am less sentimental.

Not really. Because if you are hoarding then you are. If you have a ton of stuff you never use and you are not hoarding then you are in denial, oops, scratch that.😀I mean you are admiring. Oh gosh folks. This really is meant to be a lighthearted thread.😛
