Are you hoarding?

I recently moved and had to face the fact that I have about seven moving boxes full of camera stuff of all descriptions, most of which I haven't used in ages. Hi. My name is Dirk and I am a horder.

I see it as having admired a lot of cameras over the years, but not having the time to use them, or money to buy extra gear, I now find myself with the ability to purchase gear to see if I would really like it or not.

I'm finally getting to the point where I have what I consider to be a good core of users, and some collectibles. So now the rest can go to happy homes elsewhere.

There, supposed hoarding problem solved.

Hoarding is probably a little harsh. Keeping for a change of scene sounds better 🙂.
I have 3 M's sitting unused with 5 M lenses.
2 SL's that get sporadic use with 4 R lenses.
An F5 I haven't used in a while and my Nikon D set up with 4 pro lenses.

I've learnt from experience that selling kit just because it's not being used is the wrong reason as sooner or later I will return to it.
I sold off all of my MF Nikon gear, had 9 bodies at one point, F through to F4 in multiple configs plus a load of good Nikon glass and definately wish I hadn't in some cases. Why? because I ended up buying another F2 and a couple of F3's and the same 28 and 50 I sold previously!
It's only a matter of time with some cameras and lenses before I go full circle and start using them again.

I feel much better after reading this 🙂

I got back into photography three years ago and I started buying cameras that I liked and could not afford years ago. it is a more interactive form of collecting, as they get used. At the same time it is borderline hoarding and I have bought cameras and lenses I have not had the time to use. And I did that in a very short time span.
Recently we have done works at home and having to put them in boxes, I have realized that the number got to the point that it is not easily manageable and I wish I had less.

I sold a couple of "unwanted" items recently and I probably should part me with a few more ones, but at the same time i do not see the reason why I should do without, let us say, a Leica R8 although I probably would not have a lot of chances of using it a lot.

Arguably owning these cameras and relating to their role in the history of this industry is part of the pleasure and that is a form of collecting. I.e. signs of this are that you are happier when they come with their box or, in case of rangefinders, you start buying a few unnecessary accessories.

I think there is nothing to be worried.

When I saw the pictures of the leica meters, I realized that there is a path where you end up buying again the same camera as it is so nice owning and handling it that you repeat the experience, which happened to me a few times.
