I was surprised there was no poll on this before.

Are you right handed, left handed or ambidextrous?

It's an interesting topic, since artists tend to exhibit left handedness (sinistrality) greater than the general population, which is about 90% right handed (dextral).

We'll make this poll anonymous, so as not to embarrass our "sinister" members.

I chose right, but I'm of mixed heritage and I can write left-handed, sorta.

(I can also read upside down quite easily, if anybody cares.) :)

Untill well into the sixties, being left handed was considered an anomaly, something that had to be 'cured'.

Left handedness runs in my family. I was completely left handed as a child, but forced to learn to write with right (which I ticked in the poll). I must have been the last generation of kids that's been 'converted'. Well, at least I didn't get continuously hit with a cane or get my hand tied in a bag like my fater got.. My kids are left handed again, and I'm really glad for them that this isn't any issue anymore..

Right handed, left eyed.

Ditto. When I was shooting 35mm full time being left-eyed was a bother since the cameras were all designed so a right-eyed person could keep his eye to the finder and wind at the same time. Try that left-eyed and your'll find your thumb scooping your right eye out of the socket.

Right handed, left eyed. Have we had poll correlating the two yet? That would be interesting too.

Matthew

I thought about trying to do a poll for both manual and ocular dominance, but I don't think the automatic statistics would handle it very well. So I didn't.

Mostly left handed. Made to write righty in school, so I don't write well with either hand. Typing is a godsend.

I had a student last semester who had this problem, I'd not come across it till then, being right-eyed myself.

Welcome Henry! I'm a big fan of your little shop.

Edit-
Henry- in looking I see you've been here longer than me- I had just seen your post count and assumed you were a recent join.

I used to be an ambi, many many many many years ago I broke my right arm and then just kept using the left and never looked back, now all the circles drawn with my right hand are straight lines and straight lines are circles.

oh....fyi, I use either eye with the camera, doesnt mater to me, mostly right, especially with rangefinders, but sometimes left, I dont notice when I do it though....until I jam my glasses with the frame advance

I'm a leftie..

When I was in grade school way back in the early 60's I had a teacher who tried to force me to write right handed.. I dotted her eye..with my left hand..

Right handed, left eyed. The left eye dominance is a real drag. Once in a camera store I was trying out an slr of some kind with the "joy-pad" thing on the back. It's suposed to be for your right thumb he? Well I could use my nose !!!:D

Pitxu.

I like that, Pitxu. And as Steven Wright says, I would kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Ambi, no eye dominance. This comes from playing the guitar a shed load, but also mainly I think from working in 3D for 14+ years. That is the best ambi-builder I know.

What's more interesting that left/right handed is left/right brained. Work out where you sit on that scale and you'll never have to think about which camera, style of shooting would suit you best - it'll leap out at you. I sit smack bang in the middle of this also, so I'm all over the place. :)
