are you using a case for your Leica M?

1. Price is a function of willingness to spend. One can get a user condition 1950's Leica case for $30 or less at a camera show, or a brand new Luigi case for $200 or more.

You pay what you like. The protection is the same.

2. I detect a certain disdain of those who use cases by those who think of themselves as shooters, as if the use of a case somehow moves them closer to the camp of "collectors" and "fondlers" and makes them less of "shooters". Such "shooters" think that to have a well-brassed camera with dings, dents, scratches and knocks somehow makes them more manly.

I don't buy that.

As for changing film, it takes what, 10 seconds, to unscrew the case? And you can shoot again immediately after reloading, without having to put the case back into its case.

What's the big deal?

So are you saying that you dress your M out in formal attire for those special occasions? I wonder if mine would treat me better and take better pictures if I did that. ;)

It's about dressing to fit the occasion. Nothing to do with the quality of the pictures. If I'm wearing a tuxedo, why should my camera look less than the part?

On the other hand, as I mentioned earlier, I have a well-worn old brown leather Leica case that I use when I'm just out with one camera and one lens, ie I'm not carrying a camera bag. The half-case comes with its own strap that really saves my M4 strap lugs wear and tear!

i go back and forth with a half-case, unable to decide. makes film loading more complicated, but gives me a nice "bump" for my middle and ring finger grip.
