Are you using a Leica O

Is anyone using one of the re-issue Leica O that came out a few years back.

I'm kinda interested in one for it's historical background but are they fun to use or mostly just a pain in the butt.

I see they haven't held their value so I'm thinking people must get bored with them rather quickly.

No, but I am using a black Leica Standard and Elmar which is compact, great fun and much, much, cheaper!

For the price of an 'O' you'll find some exquisite early Leicas.

Rob if you aren't into small DOF picture shooting, and if you like the 50mm lenght, the 0 should suit your taste! No rangefinder means no lost time for the decisive moment...

Think a Standard might be just as much photographic fun.
I suppose it's what you want the camera for.

I loved the Leica '0', but the price is astounding. That's why I bought a Leica Standard, and it's damn pretty too!

At £200 body only the Leica Standard was 1/5 the price of the cheapest '0'.


I really enjoy it's size and simplicity. I use it when I want a change. Contrary to popular belief, with a little practive you can get pin-sharp images using scale focus and a steady hand.

I thought the Standard was introduced about the same time as the II? It's the Leica I's that are pre-rangefinder.

... says otherwise. The Leica II (model D) might just predate the "Standard" (model E), but you'll be talking days... if that.

Btw Ash, thanks for the offer of the lens, but "Eva" currently has a Jupiter 8 attached. Someone from the local camera club lent me the lens, until I get one for myself.

If you get your hands on the "0" ("null"), remember to cap the lens everytime you wind the film and reset the shutter. I believe the 0-series used the the same, non-capping shutter found in the earliest of Leica.

As zorkikat points out the "O" shutter is not self caping. That is why the odd looking lens cap is permanently attached to the camera, after each frame it needs to on the lens before advancing the film and coking the shutter. My first and only roll of film shot with the "O" had many wasted frames because it is so easy to forget to cap the lens!

The lens gives some interesting results, very Weimar!
