The shutter has packed up and I need to open its housing, peer-in, clean, adust and lube
Has anyone any tips, hints or tricks?

Mel,
Search for the book '35mm for the Proletariat' by Hrad Kuzyk. Chapter 7 gets into maintenance. If you have problems finding the book, PM me.

I was going to suggest another site similar to the above, but I see you are looking for info on the last of the A models which had a different shutter from the Ilex Precise on the earlier ones.

I'll be interested to know how you make out with restoring your Argus FA. Looking at the pictures I have seen of the camera it appears to closely resemble the earlier A models. I take it that it has the same two-position focusing as the original Argus A. The really interesting part, though, is that coated lens which seems very promising.
Looking at the shutter on the FA it appears to be a simple one with limited speeds, so it is possible that it resembles the earlier Ilex and would not likely be difficult to open and clean. It may in fact be helpful to look at the online book about the Argus A cameras that was suggested. You might also take a look for disassembly of the Ilex shutter at the thoroughly illustrated article on the Camera Collecting and Restoration site.
I spent quite a bit of time with the full-focusing Argus A2F and AF models and reported my experiences with those cameras on my blog. I was very pleased with the results of the images and felt that they were a lot better than might be expected from what I had read from many other sources.

Thanks all,
I've just purchased the book that webOSuser suggested and I will look at the llex articles that Mike suggested. I will keep this thread up-to-date as the project progresses.
