I remember having read that Arista film is the equivalent or same stock as Agfa's APX. Is that true? IIRC, it was said in the Freestyle website, but cannot find it in it. Or was it in their catalogue?

In any case, I do like Agfa a lot... and since it seems to be out of production, I was thinking of buying a nice amount of this one instead (thereby keeping my slim Agfa reserves for other things).

Thanks!

Which Arista film were you considering? While Greyhoundman's answer above is spot on, i believe that Arista-II is in fact Agfa APX.. I've never shot APX and don't plan to, but the Foma films (particularly the 200) are quite lovely.

I ordered 32 rolls of Arista II from freestylephoto last night because I understand that it IS in fact Agfa APX 400. I developed my first roll of APX 400 the other night and I love the tones. So I know I will be very happy with Arista II if it's the same as APX 400

Here you go, Francisco:

Arista.edu = Forte
Arista.edu Ultra = Foma
Arista Pro = Ilford
Arista II = Agfa

I have used the apx 100 and pan-f equivalents and they were pretty much the same as the branded films.

Thanks a big lot, Ray! I just placed my order... and it was significantly lower than my projected Agfa purchase.

I'll keep you posted... but, in the meanwhile, let me add that the tones in Kipkeston's shot remind me a lot of what I've seen coming off my Agfa rolls.

Like this one...

This is what freestylephoto just told me

Thanks for your E-mail. At this time we have slightly over 10,000 rolls
of the 400 ISO 36 exp rolls. We are selling approximately 1000 per
month.

Well, kip... in addition to the 25 I just ordered (which are coming in the guise of Arista II), today, I took delivery of 20 rolls of 20 exposures (weird, yeah) of Agfa APX ISO 400. Apparently, the Europeans have roll needs we don't.

Don't they have 27-exposure rolls? Agfa, that is...

Oh, well... good they're selling it. Let's hope it lasts for a while! 🙂

I love the film, it's cheap yet high quality enough that I can easily practice my rangefinder skills without expense concern -=)

The edu Ultra (aka foma) is alright, though not anywhere near as smooth as Hp5 or anything of that caliber. It's great stuff to practice on.
I have some of the Arista II waiting to be shot and tested, it is slightly cheaper, and I am curious to see how it does.

Maybe not smooth, but...

Maybe not smooth, but...

I'm shooting the EDU as my primary film. I have shots that when you nail it, it's as good as anything else at that speed. Maybe it helps that I can spend some time doing my own printing, though. The fine shot percentages are probably no lower than when I use the high priced stuff.
