When to the hotels start getting booked out, Roger?

Hard to say. Contact the Rencontres office (Google the Rencontres 2011) and/or the tourist board. Many people book six months or more in advance, so choice goes down and prices go up quite rapidly from now on. You can normally find somewhere at as little as a week's notice, but at that point you may have to walk 10 minutes or more to the city centre, and you're unlikely to get away with less than 80 euros. There's always a faint chance with the Hotel Voltaire, especially for single rooms with shared bathroom, which are silly-cheap and very acceptable as well as being in central Arles: we always stay at the Voltaire.

I can not make it this year. I have a too busy schedule at work since I am retiring later this year. But next year! Then I am a pensioner!

How do you folks get from Paris to Arles? Train? How far is it by car? Will hotels be packed, or?

Olsen, take the TGV to Avignon then the regular coach to Arles station. The last bit to your hotel etc. is probably easiest by taxi.

How do you folks get from Paris to Arles? Train? How far is it by car? Will hotels be packed, or?

Paris to Arles by car : 7 hours

Paris to Arles (direct - 1 or 2 each day): 4 hours

Paris to Arles via Avignon TGV : the most used - 2h40 + 30 min with a "navette" (bus shuttle).

As much as we would love to come, I fear that our finances will not allow - we are saving for a mighty joint 60th birthday trip later this year. Not sure where yet, but "possibles" currently include Machu Pichu, Kilimanjaro, Mountain Gorrillas in Uganda and New Zealand in a motor home.

I also have to decide what camera gear to take 😱

I have been offered accomodation in Nimes for the 1st week in July. Can anyone offer information on commuting from Nimes to Arles? Local bus service? Train? If the journey is feasible I would be delighted to meet any of you in Arles.

Nîmes-Arles is about 25 km, but it's a little bit complex for transport because it isn't the same "département" and even it isn't the same "région".

So, how about Arles 2011?

Who went there, what did they see, who did they meet and did they buy anything? Shoot anything? Eat/drink anything?

Yes, I went. I saw lots, met plenty, ate and drank loads and shot almost nothing! In all seriousness, I met up with Roger, Francis and other RFFers. There's more photography here than one could describe, but suffice to say it ranges form the fantastic to the truly awful, but there is something for everyone. Its a lovely setting, a very friendly atmosphere and I hope to be here again. I also hope to manage Perpignan next year too, though both is perhaps optimistic....

For me, the finest exhibition was that of Graciela Iturbide's work. She is a photographer who I knew nothing about, but I will be adding a book or two of hers to my collection. Her work has a certain darkness and personal intensity that really came through.

I did make two reportages for Demotix in between watching the exhibitions.

Shot some film too but that will take along time to show here whit my current backlog.
Maybe next year I'll go to Perpignan instead of Arles. The timing suits my wife better next year.

Tom (Turtle) agrees with me that it was a fair review, but equally, I can't help feeling that the FT reviewer missed an awful lot off good stuff (such as the hard core porn in the laundromat), possibly through not spending quite long enough at the Rencontres. And, of course, there are always differences of opinion about what works and what doesn't. I'm currently working on a rather longer and more thorough review, though of course it is far from exhaustive.

I've been looking forward to that one, so far I have never managed to visit Arles but have always enjoyed reading your reviews of the event!

Maybe I can manage next year, one can always hope...

For those of you who can visit Arles I strongly recommend you doing so. I lived in Aix-en-Provence just outside of Arles and visited a few times. Obviously there's the Van Gogh, Gaugin and Millet influences to art in the area and the coliseum which is in fact older than the one in Rome. The real reason to visit Arles is because the quality of light in the area is like none other. The light is the reason so many artists have made it their home for so long.

I'm planning on visiting Arles for the exhibition (expedition in original post - more accurate?) next July. How far ahead must i make hotel reservations for the opening week? - one or two months, six months, now, or last year?
