10 days before the Arles Rencontres starts in the south of France

I am planning to be there at some point in August, always a great place to meet other photographers from all over the world.

I’m not too far away the week after next but far away enough to need a hotel. OUCH the prices!! Because it’s the first week I suppose. May try later in the season.

For those that don’t know Arles it is an absolute gem. Roman buildings everywhere in a beautiful compact city that is a pleasure to wander in. Even without the photographic exhibitions it is so worth visiting.

And if you want to visit a place with strong Van Gogh association there’s one ear.

I'll go the first week for the photobook fair and then once again later in the summer, as I do every year. Hotel options are very limited because the organizers basically block off most of the rooms . I usually stay in Marseille and take the train up in the morning.

Good idea, too late for me now. But there are so many amazing places nearby.

I will admit that Arles is one of my facvourite places on earth. I don’t know if it’s still there but there used to be a craft beer and history book shop; a fine combination!

I've been in Arles for 3 days this week...
Fantastic town, plenty of photographic suggestions.
I met some very nice people and watched some very good pictures.
I talked with Romain Quirot in his gallery, while looking at his reportage about the abandoned Salton City.
I met monsieur Serge Assier, a reportage photographer who linked his work to poetry thanks to his friend and poet René Char; a volcanic man, despite its almost 80 yo, when he realized I was Italian he told me about his adventures in my Country between simposium at Rome University and alchoolic nights along with friends on a fiat 500...
then he signed me a copy of Le Estanque, a reportage about the old Marsiglia Port.
I wasn't supposed to go in Arles until the last minute, so I couldn't see the dozens of exhibitions all around the town (I didn't bought the online tickets); next time I will organize better my trip because it's worth the time and money!

some shots done with the phone (the film is still in my bag, waiting to be developed!)
