New York August NYC Meet-Up

Cal, can you tolerate an interloper from Philly?

As fate decrees, we will be dropping my daughter off at NYU that day to start college. Film school at Tisch. I am very proud. Also depressed and traumatized .

SO, If it all possible, I would like to distract myself by talking about photography and meeting you nice guys. I would also like to start drinking early that day . ;-(

Randy

Randy,

Please come. Overall we are a support group and we have made many great friends. The Meet-Up starts at 1:00 PM, but Puck Fair opens at noon. If you get there early secure the big round table in the back. One time a bunch of really big crew NYFD took our spot...

BTW NYU is one of the top three film schools in the U.S.

Thanks so much Cal, I will see what time I can make it.

Yes, I am painfully aware that NYU is one of the top schools.

(200 applicants per seat) = (Great parental pride) + (zero financial aid)

Hope to see you on the 25th,

Randy

EDIT: Puck Fair is just a couple blocks from the school!

Randy,

Basically NYU is Greenwich Village, and Puch Fair is northern SoHo. I live in Spanish Harlem which some people call SpaHa, AKA "Hellgate." Madhattan is not really that big only 12 miles long and three miles wide.

I got a second graduate degree (MFA) and financed it with student loans. New School is another expensive school. I ended up refinancing my student loan, along with another outstanding student loan, at record low fixed interest rates, (rates below the rate of inflation), and because I borrow mucho money the payment period was extended over 23 years. Call me a clever bankster, but I took advantage of the US taxpayer who paid for the loss. Also know that the interest that I pay is a tax deduction. I'll explain more later. I'll learn you how to become a bankster and hose the American public with a huge bill just like the big banks.

Randy,
I bet your daughter will be joining us in a year or so. Cinematographers are serious gear heads in their own right. I've never seen a Beaulieu or a Bolex at a meetup though, so it might be a different crowd.

I'll be there as usual.

Christian,

I owned a 16mm Bolex. I got it for free. When I worked at Grumman I asked this girl who was XS'ing equipment if I could have it. She initially said no, but I used my charm and good looks to my advantage. I said, "Please" and blinked my eyes three times. She couldn't resist. LOL.

Sigh... I had to buy my own cine cameras.
I once had a summer job in an office in Hamburg, and on the last day spent most of my earnings on a Canon Super8. I later also got a beaulieu 4008, which has to be the sexiest camera ever made.

Christian,

I once found a Contax T3 in Williamsburg. It was in a black leather case and I almost stepped on it. This all happened in a abandoned area near where I lived, a kinda no mans land near the Domino sugar refinery. Back then the refinery was operating. I figure some hipster dropped it by accident.

Paid $15.00 for an operating manual, but the shutter delay made it so I did not take one decent picture, and all I ever did was waste film in that camera.

As far as cameras being sexy: most cameras get me excited. LOL. Especially ones with grips.

John,

That rig strongly resembles my Nikon F3 HP with the bonus grip I added and my black 45/2.8 P AIS mounted. All I need is the second gimbled steadycam grip, but then again I'm shooting stills not video.

Christian,

I figured out how to get my M3-DS to close focus to 0.7. I just had to straighten this lever that rests against a stop to get the cam to move out more. The M3-DS with ML-Grip and extra heavy chrome 50 Lux ASPH is a rig I call "Brutus" because it has major bowling ball factor because of mucho weight. It feels just like my Nikon F3P with motordrive. Definately a camera that John would call a "monster." LOL.

Don't send me off yet.
I'm leaving at the end of September so if there is a meetup next month, I should be able to make that one too.

As for returning, that is absolutely my intention. But right now I need to "pay my dues" in photojournalism and with the opportunities available (along with severe convective weather) out on the plains, I feel like I have to get there soon to get settled before winter.

I don't know... I don't use it much. What can I say, I'm into digital.

yes I can see that, digital makes it so easy. I'm getting used to my
Pentax as well using that most of the time. Oh by the way I went to
the city on Sunday and went by that lady at Grand Central, She saw
me and said hello sweetheart and my camera was in the bag so that
went well.

This is a bump.

Also know that Fashion Night Out 2013 has been cancelled. Some reports suggest this was due to some violence that happened in SoHo last year.

You want to meet in New York in August? Everybody I knew when I lived in the Big Apple would move heaven and earth to get OUT of NYC that month. Mad dogs and Englishmen...nice town, though, and the traffic used to be better in
August 'cause most folks left town.

SS, we meet every single month. Some months have larger meet-ups than others. Many of us in the group are not the typical vacationing NYC-ers and we get many people coming from NJ. I like to escape NYC in the winter myself. The summer is the fun time.
