New York August NYC Meet-Up

Pro-Mone,

The two incidents I remember actually happened on September first 2014 and September 5th 2016, a little more than two years apart, but there was a shooting in 2015 when Carey Gabay, a 43 year old lawyer who had worked with Gov. Cuomo was shot in the head during J'ouvert festivities. So we are talking three consecutive years of shootings where two of the three were centered around J'ouvert celebrations.

In the most recent shooting in 2016 actually took place during the J'ouvert ahead of the parade. We are talking 2014, 2015, and 2016 and not five years ago.

Below is from CBS/AP dated September 5, 2016:

"A male in his late teens or early 20's was shot in the chest around 3:50 AM... he died."

"A 66-year old woman was hurt while dodging bullets at the same location," "a 72-year-old woman was shot in the arm,"

"About 25 minutes later, a 22-year-old was shot in the head just a block away, police said. She died at a hospital."

"Another man in his 20's who was shot and injured is reportedly now being treated in stable condition."

"A woman was also stabbed in the area..."

"Earlier the same morning, a Bronx man, Denentro Josiah was stabbed to death during festivities."

"In 2014, a man was fatally shot and two people wounded during celebration."

J'ouvert happens before the parade in the early morning hours. People are drunk and only locals or people who are hardcore part of the culture attend. It involves some religious festivities as well. You have to be a little insane to go for that one. I suspect most of these shootings are not random and are drug/gang related even though its not reported as such. They really should stop it since it gives the parade a bad name since the media connect the two to be the same. The parade itself starts around midday and is over by late afternoon. They are two different things

Pro-Mone,

One report suggests it was clearly gang related. If you follow the time line some of the incidents were not really late night or early-early morning.

The media does connect these two events as one, but to be fare they are somewhat related.

There is the statistic that 80% of all crime is alcohol related.

I don't disagree that the media is not what it use to be, but I think the pattern of violence, meaning shootings, associated with the West Indian Parade is not something they (the media) invented.

Cal, it may have been in this case...not invented, but disseminated feverishly. I'm not going into detail here, but there politics involved and like Pramodh said... it's during the party the night before that this stuff happens not during the actual parade.

John,

I do believe what Pro-Mone says is true. The media kinda extended themselves and kinda used a bit of free-association to connect events. The media should have drawn the line here and should of added clarity.

But we are talking three consecutive years of violence, and in one year the shooting/killing was actually during the parade and not the pre-event. Let's not discount that one time either, or say that it was a long time ago.

what network is Maggie going to be on ?

MFM,

Update on British Airways: The video will be part of the trailers for in flight movies; the 20 packed objects I was told will be in the September in flight magazine for British Airways.

Friday "Maggie" got a last minute call to be in a music video. It was a big production involving 25-30 people. The star is a famous foreign actress who is also a highly regarded musician. The "call sheet" came in at 10:30 PM for the next day. This is how last minute things are.

Not a lot of pay, but still this is a big gig because it is a big production and will be widely seen.

Let's hope this trend doesn't migrate to NYC: "Violent criminals are still targeting photographers in San Francisco for their valuable camera equipment, and the latest victim is a 71-year-old photographer who was shot and killed this past weekend at a popular tourist spot by two robbers who stole his camera." https://petapixel.com/2017/07/19/photographer-killed-sfs-twin-peaks-camera-robbery/?

Steve,

That is an unfortunate event. NYC is still a safe city IMHO.

Keeping your hands free, being alert and ready, and a cool head should always apply.

I stopped carrying a lot of gear a while back. Partly because I'm not so young, but also because I shoot alone and go to less civilized areas where I want to be ready if anything bad happens.

Cal

Cal, l should know this, but what is link to Maggie's blog?? Thanks Steve

Steve,

www.AccidentalIcon.com

Her Instagram is Icon Accidental.

Saturday she has a shoot. She is being lined up as a model for a designer to be part of a runway show during NYC Fashion Week, and she has a gig in Montreal to speak during their fashion week.

All of her traveling has been a great opportunity for me to get back into film. Been doing a lot of testing of Rollie 400S which I will be loading into a Linhof CINE for 60+ shots of 6x7 in a magazine. I have these stainless steel reels that require 2 liters of liquid to cover that can spool 15 feet of film.

Time to shoot a Linhof like a Leica.

Cal

Cal,
Thanks, where to you get 120 in bulk?
Steve

Steve,

www.MACOdirect.de.

The price is about $98.00 which includes VAT. Take away the 18% VAT and you have 100 feet of 70mm Rollie 400S for about $80.00. 80 divided by 37 rolls is about $2.16 a roll 120 equiv. BTW this is fresh film and not dated film.

Meanwhile Rollie 400S at B&H is about $8.00 a roll in 120.

A roll of 120 is 32.5 inches of film, so 100 feet of film is almost 37 rolls of 120 equiv plus bonus frames.

Hasselblad 70mm backs are abundant and inexpensive.

BTW Rollie 400S is AKA Rollie Superpan 200 and Agfa Aerophot 200. 400 ISO is a lie. In Rodinal for 11 minutes 1:50 I got 50 ISO on a cloudy day so I figure 80 ISO on a sunny day.

I learned that Freestyle sells a Rollie developer that is a compensating developer that gives an honest 200 ISO that works great with this film. Diluted to 1+15 you get 4 liters of developer for $21.59. This is a one shot.

Check out Dan's 70mm thread for details. My idea is to shoot a lot of film for no money. I never thought medium format could be less expensive to shoot on a per shot basis than 135. Understand I'm talking a 6x7 negative, but on a 6x6 the cost is even less than 135.

I was told by "Maggie" that her segment will be broadcast sometime next week on NBC World News Tonight.

I expect a tiny cameo appearance of me shooting my SL in Tribeca and chimping my camera for Maggie. I think there is potential for some of my shots taken that day to be used as "B-roll." Also very likely that some of my shots from that rooftop fashion party on the 18 story Public Hotel will be used because no video coverage was provided.

I'm not sure I'll have a specific date to post when this will be first broadcast.

Anyways kinda exciting that my photography might be seen by millions during prime-time. Let's see if NBC mispells my three letter last name on the photo credits, or if some other photographer gets credit for my work, or if I get credit for someone else's work. LOL.

Cal,
I thought that 70mm was not available. This is very interesting. I have to look into using 70mm with a hasselblad C.

Steve

Steve,

Seems like A70 backs are abundant and cheap.

Ilford has an ULF program, but it is basically an annual event for special order custom made films. The next cycle will be in 2018. I just missed the 2017 cycle.

In the spring you order; over the summer Ilford manufactures the film; and in the fall your order is shipped. Not inexpensive, but cheaper than hiring two camera assistants to continually load cameras like Richard Avedone when he shot Rollie's.

I think 15 feet in an A70 back is something like 70 6x6 exposures. I figure I save two liters of developer when I process one 15 foot roll verses processing 6 stainless steel 120 reels. I also save time.

I figure I can buy a huge JOBO Expert tank made for prints to use as a daylight tank. The 15 foot reels are almost 7 inches in diameter. I figure I'll trim a JOBO Expert tank down to hold two reels which is like 12 rolls of 120 plus some bonus frames. I'm talking over 120+ 6x7's.

Somehow I found a rare, maybe prototype, 645 Linhof CINE 70 mm back that will make over 120+ 645 negatives with 15 feet of film. This 645 back I bought from a German dealer. My 53/4.5 Zeiss Biogon in 645 changes from a 28mm FOV in 6x7 to a 35mm FOV in 645.

I figure the Linhof 2x3 Tech V with the Biogon will be my most used film camera. Economies of scale will promote its use. Although a heavy camera, not having to reload will make it a fast shooter. Shooting film does not get cheaper than this. Cheaper than 135 on a per shot basis.

Been away scoping out a new city. It is a bit rude coming back to New York.

The NBC broadcast as far as I know did not happen. No word on when it will be aired. Oh-well.

Cal

So what new city...
Joe

Joe,

Seattle. Made mucho friends and connections. Seems likely I can have a studio/work-space and darkroom.

It seems like I can enjoy biking. You might not like the long hills. Pretty much interval training. While I was there there was a heat wave and unusual weather, but very tame compared to New York heat and humidity. The mornings are cool, but the heat builds over the day. We have to go back to experience the rain and short days...

Hard to compare NYC to Seattle, but I liked and enjoyed the change. Lots of homeless though...

A friend of ours introduced us to a curator/director of the Seattle Arts Museum, and somehow we got to see a sold out show there. Basically after coffee we were smuggled in through a back entrance and led to the front of a line to get 4 tickets that were only available that day. The shows capacity was increased by 125 tickets a day.

One of our friends is a gender/bender who is a male model who will be "walking" the runway during London's Fashion Week. Victor is a celeb and seemed to know everybody in Seattle.

One of Maggie's designer friends had us meet many influential people. Really inspired by the openness. NYC seems like a dead end in comparison.

Cal,

Well, the Pacific Northwest. That sounds interesting. Maybe in my next life; I'm good and stuck here in NYC.

Got a Intrepid 4x5 to go with that 90mm Angulon I picked up at B&H. Got some surprisingly good results on my first outing. From 6 shots 2-1/2 keepers...

Joe

Joe,

Nothing like a big negative. I have Christians old 4x5 Tech IV that is so old that it has real leather covering (came that way from the factory) that has mucho wear and a great patina.

At the next Meet-Up bring some bad exposed 4x5 sheet film. I have a Nikor sheet film reel and tank that adjusts to handle a dozen 2x3, 6.5x9 or 4x5.

Then again there's nothing like having a CINE magazine that allows me tho shoot over 60 6x7's, or 120 645's without reloading.

I'm so glad that I shot NYC for over a decade like a madman. I pretty much have a lifetime worth of printing ahead of me.
